League of Legends: Twisted Fate Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Nov 012012

Twisted Fate, the Card Master
Twisted Fate, the Card Master

Twisted Fate, the Card Master sticks to his gambler roots in all his skins while offering different versions of the classic role. Some concepts work better than others but overall they all have a bit of Twisted Fate in them. It’s destiny to choose the best outfit for Twisted Fate so better than trusting his stacked deck, open a gate to his skins’ review.

PAX Twisted Fate
PAX Twisted Fate Splash Art PAX Twisted Fate Model
Category: Promotional
Price: Not Applicable
Concept: Twisted Fate wearing his classic clothes in black and blue, adorned with the PAX’09 logo.
Model: New textures for Twisted Fate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This piece is effective in catching the eye but doesn’t work well as a portrayal of Twisted Fate’s in-game look. The background is only a blue magical mist or energy surrounding Twisted Fate so there’s no setting to speak of. Twisted Fate depiction is very well delineated and shaded but he resembles his original model not the upgraded one. Also, the thrown tarot cards are a nice touch but they don’t represent the cards the he actually uses. In summary, a visually attractive splash art that doesn’t serves its objective.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Pax Twisted Fate is a minor re-texture that serves more as a product endorsement than an actual skin. The blue and black colour palette isn’t a bad choice but looks too subdued. Furthermore, there isn’t much that is different from Classic Twisted Fate, except the gigantic PAX logo on his coat and shoulders. As a promotional skin it isn’t unusable but it sure isn’t worth worrying about missing it.

Jack of Hearts Twisted Fate
Jack of Hearts Splash Art Jack of Hearts Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Blonde Twisted Fate wearing his classic clothes decorated with a heart suit motif.
Model: New textures for Twisted Fate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In spite of the extremely blurry background one can get an idea of the setting. The throne room is inexplicably foggy and its architecture can only be guessed at but, at least, there’s a setting. In the throne we find the King of Clubs with his golden armour glinting under the sunlight. On the stairs, we find the elegant but distant Queen of Diamonds; not far from the sinister Joker. On the other side, in the darkness we find a knave discretely hiding his presence. In the foreground, a confident aristocrat greets us as we approach the room.
In general, each champion receives a portion of the spotlight and, mostly, characteristic traits are noticeable. Perhaps Shaco should’ve been in the darkness while Twisted Fate charmingly received the viewer or presented the court to us. Besides, Mordekaiser doesn’t say much sitting in the throne and doesn’t really strike as imposing; except for his title.
Ultimately, the splash art presents the champions in a rather clear way in an appropriate setting. The background could’ve been clearer and some champions could’ve been better presented. Still, considering how many champions vie for the viewer’s attention, this is a piece that manages to give each a relevant place that is supported by the others.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Jack of Hearts is a distinct and even flashy re-texture for Twisted Fate. It takes the heart suit as a base and decorates his clothes in a rather appealing though simple way. In other words, the changes are small but the theme comes through along the nice red and white palette. The blonde hair and beard seem to be a whim, much as his clothes resembling his old self’s style, yet they don’t clash with the theme. Overall, Jack of Hearts is a whimsical but interesting look for a card master.

The Magnificent Twisted Fate
The Magnificent Twisted Fate Splash Art The Magnificent Twisted Fate Model
Category: Legacy, Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate dressed as a stage magician.
Model: Major model changes for Twisted Fate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Blue web-like effects and sparks adorn this portrayal of Twisted Fate as the background is missing without notice. There are also a few cards flying with some interesting drawings but they don’t appear as they do in-game. Twisted Fate’s depiction is rather good though the cape covers all his body, preventing a clear vision of his clothes. Additionally, the cape helps make the look resemble the in-game version, as many details aren’t visible; still, it’s obvious it’s based in its previous incarnation. Overall, a disappointing piece undeserving of representing a legendary skin.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Practically a re-model, the Magnificent Twisted Fate is a victim of the evolution of League of Legends. What once would’ve been a formidable new model is now a product unbefitting of its legendary label. Truth be told, it’s a good look that accomplishes the style of a classic illusionist. However, a new look is all there is and currently, much more is expected. Those that already own it will probably enjoy the refined model but for the rest it isn’t something to envy.

Tango Twisted Fate
Tango Twisted Fate Splash Art Tango Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate dressed as a rose-munching tango dancer.
Model: Major model changes for Twisted Fate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: A grand drape is all that this piece exhibits for a background. In the foreground, Twisted Fate dances dramatically with Evelynn framed by a mysterious glow; she looks very attractive and elegant. Her pure skin is a great match to the intense red of her dress. Twisted Fate matches her colour scheme but his clothes don’t look as good. The hat seems made of plastic and despite the jacket having a nice ornamented neck piece the rest looks rather dull. Overall, the piece serves as a portrayal of Twisted Fate’s tango style but Evelynn steals the show.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Tango Twisted Fate stands between two different interpretations without realizing either and therefore suffering from the flaws of both. On the one hand, the rose in his mouth and embroidered suit hint at a flashy tango dancer. On the other hand, the overall sober aspect and mute colours suggest a believable tango dancer with a realistic base. The confluence of polar elements ends with a tango dancer that dresses a little too serious and looks a little too flashy. In the end, it still is Twisted Fate as a tango dancer but it isn’t a look that accomplishes more than that. At its price it’s a nice alternative, especially for tango and Card Master fans, but it has its issues.

High Noon Twisted Fate
High Noon Twisted Fate Splash Art High Noon Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate styled as a Far West cowboy.
Model: Major model changes for Twisted Fate.
Particles: New particles for Wild Cards.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Batwing doors open to show smoking bullet marks and a man with blank eyes coming into the saloon. Behind him the dust of the street conveniently covers the scenery. In front of him, a flurry of cards departs from his hand, propelled by a mysterious essence, as bullets barely miss their mark. The setting of this piece is very well done and makes up for any minor flaws in its execution. In addition to this, Twisted Fate is impeccably depicted: his clothes show folds and reflect the light while his expression perfectly suits a man with more power than meets the eye. This is a piece like few that provide a little glimpse into a story with a very high quality to back it up. Definitely one of League of Legends best splash arts.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Even though Classic Twisted Fate sports a look with heavy Far West influences High Noon Twisted Fate actually delivers the classic cowboy look. Boots with spurs, chaps over the jeans, Boss of the Plains hat, napkin around the neck and belt with a distinctive buckle effectively make the look. The leather jacket looks quite nice as well but it hardly is a usual cowboy piece. Regardless, the general look is distinctive and recognizable as belonging to the Wild West. All things considered, it’s a nice skin with a classic concept and a good execution; perfect for Maverick fans.

Musketeer Twisted Fate
Musketeer Twisted Fate Splash Art Musketeer Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate as a French Musketeer of the Guard.
Model: Major model changes for Twisted Fate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: A wall and a tower frame Twisted Fate as the intense sunlight makes everything fuzzy. Hanging from a rope the Musketeer throws cards charged with magical energy at the halberdiers. The background is quite simple but serves as a minimal frame for the action. Twisted Fate looks rather daring, making for an interesting situation. However, his stance hides most of his clothes and his look isn’t easily visible. Besides, for being the most important part of the piece he uses a very small fraction of space. What is seen of his clothes is good but his boots don’t match those in-game. All things considered, it’s a splash art with an interesting composition that ultimately doesn’t work that well.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Musketeer Twisted Fate has more in common with the French musketeers of 1660, created by Louis XIII, than more modern incarnations. Even more, his aspect could easily homage D’Artagnan’s monument in Paris. In fact, it’s a look that seems to draw inspiration from fictional musketeers instead of historical ones. In spite of the flamboyant look and lack of a proper musket or rapier, Twisted Fate looks quite good yet it’s a bit of a forced concept, due to the weapon mismatch. Regardless, it’s a good looking skin in general that does fit Twisted Fate’s demeanour if not his ways; after all, soldiers usually like a wage.

Underworld Twisted Fate
Underworld Twisted Fate Splash Art Underworld Twisted Fate Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate as a spectral gambler.
Model: New model for Twisted Fate and new glow for his left arm.
Particles: New particles for his auto-attack, Wild Cards, Pick a Card (Card Selection), Stacked Deck and Gate.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New sounds for Wild Cards, Stacked Deck, Gate and critical hits.
Splash Art: Gothic buildings raise over the mist that shrouds the city while a cloudy sky covers all. Leaning on a wall a mysterious figure offers a bet that may include more than gambling. The background is actually a bit too sunny and clear for Twisted Fate’s haunting style; even if it looks abandoned. Regardless, his depiction is great: his eyes echo his left arm’s glow and his armour looks to have successfully served its function, shining under the sunlight. Truth be told, this piece shows a dichotomy as the ghastly Twisted Fate doesn’t suit the sunlit and pristine city. On the whole, it’s a nice splash art that shows great quality in its implementation but suffers from a contradictory composition.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: As a ghostly card master Twisted Fate works better than could be expected. The model suits him up in a dazzling outfit that combines chains and spikes for a distinct wraith-like aspect. It looks as effective protection as it looks comfortable but the aesthetic is well realized. Nevertheless, the new card particles are a stunning addition to deliver the theme. White, semi-transparent and glowing they perfectly fit as the cards of a spectral gambler. There are a few extra changes that, while minor, do add to the skin: Pick a Card shows worn-out cards to choose while Wild Cards has an ominous new sound. Additionally, Gate gets new sounds and particles that truly make Twisted Fate seem like an apparition dissolving in thin air. On the whole, Underworld Twisted Fate is an accomplished skin that contrives to be more than the sum of its parts and is very pleasing to use.

Red Card Twisted Fate
Red Card Twisted Fate Splash Art Red Card Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate as a referee.
Model: Major model changes for Twisted Fate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: Whistle blow for Gate.
Splash Art: The splash art, shared by all of the new football skins, is a bit of a mess. The background is unnecessarily diffuse, as if the depth of field effect was a way of working less. It gives the idea of a pitch but looks blurry. The champions stand to the right as a sapling-football blurrily rolls on the right. Their portrayal has sharp colours but the proportions don’t convince: some champions seem too small and others too large. Besides, they don’t state anything else besides their presence. It’s as basic a depiction as possible and that makes the piece lack a meaning. In the end, it’s a splash art with no personality that impresses with its crisp colouring but when you look closer you find little.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In spite of the similar aspect to a player Twisted Fate breaks the monotony by adopting the appearance of a referee. That’s a perfectly fitting idea due to his coloured cards which nicely help to fill the role. Nonetheless, there are some things to excuse. It’s necessary to ignore his blue cards and hat, the whistle is strangely strapped to his hand plus while the clothes look fine they are nothing impressive. In the end, it’s a simple skin with a clever concept that will probably appeal to football fans.

Cutpurse Twisted Fate
Cutpurse Twisted Fate Splash Art Cutpurse Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate as a fancy, magical pickpocket.
Model: New model for Twisted Fate and new blue card for his joke, standing idle and recall.
Particles: New cards for Pick a Card.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The setting is undoubtedly too blurry as the action takes place over a medium distance. Regardless, the background manages to display things in a way that one gets a good idea of the context. We have two stylish pirates fighting a generic ship’s crew and it seems like the stakes are high. Although the background is brief and only meaningful in a small area on the left it conveys a significant amount of information. Regardless, elsewhere it’s diffuse and only fills space. Coming from an unconvincing barrel, the oranges on the floor lack volume: they look flat.
The stylish pirates, with a rather modern feel to them, don’t mind each other and concentrate on the fight. They trust each other and know how to complement their abilities to get away from a tight spot. It also helps that the portrayals are crisp with details and make the most of their elaborate gear. The lighting is fantastic and the difference in tones between surfaces under the shade and sunlight is delightful. Where appropriate, the metal shines, the leather is marked though hair is a bit cartoony and the cloth seems too shiny and new. Nevertheless, both pirates make a great show with their smoking cannon and glowing cards. Additionally, it’s a pity that on the lower part of their bodies the quality gets a tad sketchy.
In general, the depiction of Graves and Twisted Fate fighting together is evocative and a relevant remainder of their lost friendship. The context is different to what it is now but it feels like a possible event in the complex life of these two. The background is a tad uneven in places but full of significance, which added to the way that the champions integrate on the action, allows the piece to proudly approach the podium of the best splash arts in League of Legends. A great example of how multiple champions can be depicted at the same time.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Elaborate clothing, full of golden decorations and designed to attract the eye makes Cutpurse Twisted Fate seem escaped from a Pirates of the Caribbean film. The hairstyle and beard only contribute to make that statement even more convincing. Actually, there isn’t much that reveals the Card Master as a pirate and as a criminal he seems to be rather extravagant. Regardless, considering the fictionalized approach the idea of a fancy thief that ends up as a hero fits.
There’s one addition that adds to the identity of the skin even if it doesn’t really further develop the theme. That is the new card designs for Pick a Card. Unfortunately, his other actions still rely on the classic designs so it feels inconsistent. Another aspect that negatively affects the skin is the lack of a hat. It’s not that the aspect requires it, though it could work with one, but that his animations are based on the presence of one. Without a hat, his joke, recall and even Gate look very peculiar and the card fix doesn’t work that well.
All in all, Cutpurse Twisted Fate is an elaborate style that doesn’t say pirate or criminal loudly but that could pass for one with a sufficient dose of fiction. His aspect isn’t bad but the inconsistencies don’t help an improbable concept with a frail implementation. As a fancy style for the Card Master it works but you’ll have to excuse its flaws.

Blood Moon Twisted Fate
Blood Moon Twisted Fate Splash Art Blood Moon Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate playing the role of a dark spirit in the Ionian Festival of Fire play; which resembles a Japanese Noh theatre play.
Model: New model for Twisted Fate.
Particles: New red particles for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: At a glance, it looks like there’s a mysterious figure inside a wooden warehouse. Lighting is soft and appealing but surfaces simple which give the setting a dull feel. The fact that there’s little relevance, as any other place would do, means that the background fills space more than support the main character.
Twisted Fate appears as a supernatural being channelling circles of black cards in front of an altar. Some recognisable oni masks can be seen around while a few masked cultists insinuate their presence in all their diffuse subtlety. Colours for Twisted Fate’s clothing are particularly soft with shading that almost appears diffuse even though there’s a nice use of light. From the waist down everything looks blurry, like the back and right arm, but the upper half exhibits some wrinkles and folds as well as reflections on the metal lining of the gear. The glowing gold card on the hand is also attractive. Its light permeated that hand and arm though the sparks can end up looking like simple blots of ink; something shared by the simple black cards.
All added up, this is a piece that doesn’t have much help from the setting to give a good context to the action. The background has a perceivably sketchy feel and only the upper body of Twisted Fate displays some good use of light and shade; even though surfaces look diffuse. The result is little more than a show of meaningless card magic where only the gold card attracts attention while the black ones barely matter. While the idea of the depiction is good the specifics could use some improvement.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: There’s no doubt that Blood Moon Twisted Fate owes much, perhaps too much, to Underworld. The supernatural vein is clear and while Blood Moon is more colourful it also strikes as less spectral. That may be alright given that Blood Moon has a more specific style but that isn’t always shown in the skin. The model changes the hat for a hood and then follows the classic Card Master look. While colourful despite the dark tones and even a bit eye-catching with the regal gold decoration he looks more like a circus act than a dark sorcerer. That’s not to say that he doesn’t look good but he doesn’t look sombre or mysterious. On the contrary, he seems to attract attention with an appealing and welcoming look; despite the masks lean design.
Particles aren’t a re-colour but they often feel like they are. Their translucent red style reminds of Underworld with the different tone as the main difference. There’s also the welcome addition of florid trails that emphasise the supernatural aspect but neither auto-attacks, Wild Cards or Stacked Deck noticeably stand apart from the classic design. At least, the cards used for all the abilities exhibit original backs with clear Blood Moon logos. Pick a Card is a bit different as the back of the cards show unique symbols nicely painted with evident brushstrokes; which adds a lot of personality to the cards. The fact that each exploding card uses dissolving kanji also adds to the personality; they look similar but there’s enough variety thanks to their different effects. Destiny shows a rather interesting black eye of red-blood iris with subtle veins. The elaborate crown of golden fire around makes for a nice support with a resulting effect somewhat similar to Sauron’s eye. Gate employs the same golden cards used for Pick a Card with adds consistency but combats variety; unlike Underworld in this case. The circle of cards is surrounded by a translucent elaborate design which adds to the flashy style of the skin instead of the supernatural side. Additionally, the flurry of red trails surrounding Twisted Fate when channelling appears detached from the otherwise colourful and florid style of the rest of the ultimate.
Sounds receive a more haunting style that seems familiar but also distinct in their eerie tone. The sound of card shuffling is easily recognisable but is nicely supported by the subtly gloomy sounds. The recall is a bit strange given Gate’s function. The summoning of a torii portal to walk through is done in a way proper of an illusionist which detracts from the supernatural angle. The flying cards in a red swirl of magic seem a bit simple as their backs are difficult to notice with red over black sinking in the red trail. The torii is nicely built even if unsurprising and the actual portal with its blue colour looks magical enough yet not spooky in any way.
When all is added together, Blood Moon Twisted Fate is a skin that doesn’t go far beyond what Underworld already offers. There’s an evident shared personality with Blood Moon having some overt illusionist inclinations; to the point of stepping on The Magnificent Twisted Fate’s toes. The colourful and even eye-catching design of costume and cards, despite the red trails and eerie touch of the sounds, ends up making the skin eye-catching but hardly mysterious or frightening; as should be expected. The fact that the personality of the skin seems to veer so much towards the spectacle without concentrating on the supernatural makes it lack focus as neither theme is fully developed. In spite of this, Blood Moon Twisted Fate is a good skin. Just don’t expect it to be particularly elaborate or sombre

Pulsefire Twisted Fate
Pulsefire Twisted Fate Splash Art Pulsefire Twisted Fate Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Twisted Fate as hi-tech gambler
Model: New model for Twisted Fate.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New death and recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: It’s possible that Riven is in hot pursuit of a certain gambler or perhaps just following her teammate in a mission. Either way, we seem to be in a city stuck in time where the classic hasn’t disappeared under the weight of technology. It’s a pity though that everything is so diffuse as there’d be a lot to say about whether these characters are friends or foes, time travelling or globe-trotting and with what destiny in mind. What is suggested by the setting is London and nothing more.
Twisted Fate’s appearance seems sudden with a burst of energy around him; energy which also blurs his left arm, legs and coat. The grid pattern on the legs aims at explaining the blur but it’s too subtle and not seen elsewhere. It’s an effect that would’ve communicated the apparition much better than a simple blur. The upper body is more clearly depicted but colours are dim so that the details of the plates and coat aren’t easy to notice; to the point that the bowler hat would appear flat without the metal band. The right vambrace with a circular interface is a good touch to add the necessary sci-fi quotient. After all, the left counterpart is barely visible and the armour strikes as styled medieval protection. The golden card in hand, is a good choice but the glow is too dim and solid and the design of the card difficult to notice properly. The fact that face and hand appear sketchy near sharp metallic surfaces finishes the uneven feel of the portrayal.
All added together, this is a splash art with a background with potential that ends up only suggesting instead of presenting aspects of a story. The portrayal is clearly uneven and while it works with the background to hint at a story it suffers from evident problems. Thanks to the story elements this is a piece that serves as presentation card despite not taking advantage of its best features.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: With a style that is certainly fantastic in the fictional and impractical way Pulsefire Twisted Fate appears as a futuristic, British gambler; at least the bowler hat and beard give him such an air. The stylised coat would’ve welcomed some lights and perhaps animated glows because it looks rather simple. The armour underneath is more elaborate with patterns and decorations to suggests a pinstripe suit, from a peculiar future. The general feel is a mix of sci-fi with elegance that is certainly fictional but interesting.
Particles deliver a holographic, hi-tech card feel that makes the skin special. To be fair, auto-attacks look more like blasts of energy but Wild Cards is much more clear about the cards; even if the energy may feel generic and devoid of personality. Stacked deck is also quite eye-catching when cards fly around the enemy and disappear in a spark but the indicator looks rather similar to classic. Pick a Card takes the best of the hi-tech card angle by showing the futuristic design of the cards and adding GUI elements that are as useful as they are pleasing to the eye; it’s clear which and when one chooses a card. On top of that, throwing the card leaves a circuit-like trail that communicates the hi-tech theme much better than in Wild Cards. The effects of the cards on enemies are somewhat subtle, though. The designs are sparse and colours are weak to the point that Gold Card barely shows any gold. Destiny furthers the skin’s concept with advanced cameras that look around with light and GUI-like decoration. Gate employs the same cameras as projectors in charge of transporting Twisted Fate which is a bit of a letdown. A different design, even if only slightly different, to communicate that the method is different would’ve helped. Technology could be multi-purpose but specialisation would add personality to each part of the ultimate. Speaking of which, the grid-patterned disappearance is great. However, when Twisted Fate appears there’s no grid effect or anything of the sort which leaves the latter part of Gate feeling hollow.
Sounds are comprised of energy vibrations over card slappings; when cards are employed. Sadly, the aural landscape feels rather monotonous with no single ability that stands out. What strikes as a monopolising, classic remnant is the card slappings for auto-attacks and card-related abilities which lack a hi-tech feel yet are louder than the energy touch added to them. It makes card abilities lack a sufficiently strong futuristic feel despite the evocative visuals.
The new recall animation is rather straightforward: Twisted Fate picks a place to go and uses a portal. That’s actually a rather practical approach for such a flashy character but it surely communicates the theme well. The new death is melodramatic and, given that Twisted Fate is only wearing a hi-tech suit and isn’t a synthetic human, rather exaggerated. Still, it adds a little to the concept.
All in all, Pulsefire Twisted Fate effectively communicates the futuristic, hi-tech gambler it aims to. It isn’t done without flaws as the hi-tech angle isn’t always as evocative as it can be at its best. Regardless, this is a great choice for a sci-fi styled Card Master; with a touch of British elegance.

Conclusion

As a gambler some concepts suit Twisted Fate better than others but none are inappropriate. In fact, people like to bet in all aspects of life and so the role can see some variety. Therefore, Musketeer Twisted Fate is the recommended skin from the ones regularly available. It’s a visually attractive and reasonably priced skin that gives the Card Master a distinct style.

Nevertheless, the most interesting skin is Underworld Twisted Fate even though there’s usually a limited time to catch it. The price won’t see high discounts but the skin justifies the expense with a nice model and attractive particles as well as sounds.

High Noon Twisted Fate is an interesting alternative as a gambling cowboy is a classic concept. Red Card Twisted Fate is a nice football themed skin with a suitable choice of role. Tango Twisted Fate has conflicting elements but is well priced and can still appeal to tango fans. Finally, Jack of Hearts is a cheap but ultimately unimpressive skin; yet it looks good enough for its price.

Borrowing in spades from Pirates of the Caribbean, Cutpurse Twisted Fate is a skin that puts style first and the concept afterwards. The pirate or criminal theme is weak and besides the extravagant look there isn’t much; even if it does catch the eye. The inconsistencies present in the skin are rather noticeable though so if you like it expect to find things to overlook.

Blood Moon Twisted Fate is fine option with not much of a supernatural apparition and more than a bit of flashy illusionist. The colourful costume and cards end up being rather eye-catching in a welcoming way despite the subtle eerie feel of the sounds. In spite of this lack of focus the skin is appealing provided you can excuse the similarities with Underworld and The Magnificent.

Although not as consistent as it could be Pulsefire Twisted Fate is an effective sci-fi style. The skin has evocative particles and while it tends to be flashy in model and monotonous in sound it adds up to a satisfying whole. It surely isn’t a perfect skin but for a hi-tech gambler there’s no better choice.

77 Responses to “League of Legends: Twisted Fate Skins’ Review”

  1. Thanks for the review much appreciated 😀

  2. Can u make a better screen shot for high noon twisted fate, because it got hard for me to choose which skin and I haven’t seen high noon tf in game before.
    Thanks for your good Reviews!

  3. Hey Zero what’s your favorite splash art?
I’d say mine is Dragonblade Talon.

    • Difficult question, because, even though on the whole they aren’t that many, they are quite a few due to the sheer number of splash arts available. A quick search for the classic phrase ‘one of League of Legends’ best’ not only reveals a few typos but also a good amount of great pieces.

We definitely agree on Dragonblade Talon and, as you can imagine, Sewn Chaos Orianna is also a favourite. In general, pieces that tell a bit more of the champion, a little story, or those that simply leave you with your mouth open are splash arts that deserve to be an example.

  4. One thing i believe you failed to mention in your jack of hearts twisted fate skin review is that the colors on his cape are actually reversed in comparison to his splash art and it is missing a red heart near the top of the cape.

    • You are very much right, good eye and thanks for the notice. Seeing as the splash art largely deviates from Twisted Fate’s in-game look we didn’t go into specifics but we surely could add some more detail.

We’ll add those elements as soon as possible. Thanks again for the notice.

  5. Underworld Twisted Fate should be a legendary skin but because it’s only on Halloween i agree with the price

    • To be legendary Underworld Twisted Fate would also need new animations and a new voice-over, though it’s certainly a striking skin nonetheless. Still, we agree, considering it’s quality and seasonal nature it has a reasonable price.

  6. Hello again Zero, I recently watched a video where High Noon Tf had a new particle for his Q, cards are replaced by dollars. Just wanted to let you know so you can add it to the review whenever you can 🙂 Here is the vid i saw the changes: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w5_3v4MyVMU a stream from xpeke

  7. What skin do you recommend to me high noon or musketeer tf, and should i wait for underworld one?

    • Underworld Twisted Fate is really nice and by Halloween it should be back at the store; as it’s a legacy skin

In terms of looks, both High Noon and Musketeer Twisted Fate look good. Thus, their different concepts can be what really sets them apart. Additionally, Musketeer’s model appears more dazzling but High Noon has some new particles. Overall, they are both good skins but the one that stands out is Underworld.

  8. So will Underworld Twisted Fate come back this year or no?
Because I’ve heard people say that because it was an event skin for the Twisted Treeline rework, rather than Harrowing, that it is a limited skin, not a legacy.
But i can still dream, right?

    • Theoretically, both Shadow Isles and Harrowing skins from 2012 are legacy and should come back this year again. At the very least that seemed to be Riot’s intention as they even didn’t want to have the Shadow Isles skins as legacy. They did label them as such due to fan request. After all, considering all the work that went in implementing those skins they wanted to have them available as much as possible.

With the exception of some strange and unusual reasons, those skins should be back this year so better than dream about them, get ready for them.

  9. So with the vintage skins coming back, what are your 3 favourite harrowing skins and 3 favourite christmas skins?

    • Well, the 2011 Harrowing skins are very nice though there are a few from 2010 that are also nice like Nosferatu Vladimir and Pumpkinhead Fiddlesticks. The Snowdown skins tend to be too centred on the holidays. Silent Night Sona seems to be rather nice despite the restricted concept.

  10. For Red Card Twisted Fate, when he uses his ultimate it also makes a whistle sound.

  11. Hi,

I am a huge fan of your reviews! Also, Underworld TF is not featured in the conclusion.

    • Glad that you like them. We sometimes don’t include legacy skins or others with limited availability in the conclusion as we prefer to concentrate on what’s available. However, we are adding them as they are relevant nonetheless.

We’ll add a sentence or two to Twisted Fate’s conclusion so that it’s more complete. Thanks for the notice.

  12. Hi Zero, I was just wondering when I might be able to next grab Underworld Twisted Fate?

    Thanks in advance

    • Most probably around Halloween during the Harrowing event. It could appear in a bundle at some point, it has happened with some Snowdown skins, but that’s much less probable.

  13. Btw, Underworld skin also has an ominous sound whenever he crits

  14. I like the model for Cutpurse a lot but I like the particles and sounds for Underworld just as much (don’t like the model though). Which one do you think is more appropriate for me to buy, considering I don’t play him all that much to warrant buying 2 skins.

    • From what you mention Cutpurse seems to be the skin you like though it doesn’t have new particles. Underworld does have new particles and sounds but if you don’t like his looks then chances are you won’t enjoy the skin much. You’ll probably appreciate the new particles but the base of every skin is the model.

Cutpurse is a simpler skin but also cheaper and can even be bought on sale; if you are the patient kind. In that case you may want to go with Cutpurse. We agree, the skin would benefit from some extra work to make it more special but you like the model. At least Pick a Card has new designs for the cards; even if the rest of the abilities don’t use them.

You may also want to consider some of the other skins if the lack of particles on Cutpurse doesn’t convince you. However, only Underworld has new particles and sounds so we are back at the beginning.

In the end, we’d say that you should buy what you really like. Underworld is more elaborate but if you don’t like it chances are that it won’t be used much. Cutpurse is a modest alternative but you do like it so, at the very least, you’ll enjoy what it has to offer.

  15. Thanks for the review! Il´l get Underworld TF

For the reviewer, what is your favorite 1820 RP skin? just a random question 😀

    • Hope you enjoy Underworld Twisted Fate; it’s quite a nice skin.

The more recent legendary skins are quite good; PROJECT: Yi aside. The legendary skins we think that do the best job at delivering a striking style are: Blackfrost Anivia, Battlecast Prime Cho’Gath, Dunkmaster Darius, Infernal Nasus, Eternum Nocturne, Super Galaxy Rumble and Omega Squad Teemo; all at four stars.

They aren’t perfect skins but they go an extra step to make the theme interesting and attractive. Any of these legendaries are worth getting and wouldn’t disappoint with all they have to offer.

  16. Whilst The Magnificent Twisted Fate is on sale for 910 rp, do you think it is worth picking up? A mystery gift is also included, so in theory, 910 rp – 490rp (price of mystery gift) = 420 rp. Is this a good time to purchase it, due to the value?

    • With a mystery gift there’re no guarantees so it’s up to your liking of making a wager. On sale, The Magnificent Twisted Fate is a skin with some charm but still only a re-model so expensive for 910 RP. We’d say that it’s better left for dedicated fans of the Card Master or those that have a specific liking for the look. It’s quite the superficial skin but fitting so there’s something to like, it’s just expensive for what it offers.

  17. what is high noon tf wild card new particle i cant notice different from base skin

  18. How can I get the underworld skin for twisted fate?

    • You’ll have to wait until the Harrowing event which happens around Halloween; by the end of October. The skin could appear in a bundle or other special event but Harrowing is the expected time for Underworld Twisted Fate and other Halloween skins to become available again.

  19. Hey Zero,
Right now for me Jack of Hearts is 260 rp and i have 993.
Do you you think I should get it? Thanks

    • Only if you like the heart suit motif of his clothes. Jack of Hearts Twisted Fate is a cheap but also modest skin that doesn’t aim very high with its implementation. Truth be told, if you like the Card Master there are better ways of spending RP, like Underworld.

Even if you only want to spend 260 RP Tango offers more; though it’s something entirely different. If you specifically like what the skin has to offer then get it. If not, then you should get a skin that you really like. Chances are it will be discounted sooner or later.

      • Ah, already brought it.
It’s not that bad but thanks nonetheless.

        • It surely isn’t a bad skin and even better if you like the card theme. It always depends on what you look for in a skin. A skin can be packed chock-full of new features but if you don’t like the idea behind the skin it just won’t work. Hope you Jack of Hearts.

  20. Do you know if underworld tf will be availible for purchase next year for harrowing?

    • It should, as a legacy skin originating in that event. It would be very unusual if it didn’t return so it’s reasonable to expect Underworld Twisted Fate to return in each Harrowing.

  21. Hey Zero, Im thinking about getting musketeer tf but Im not sure I like the cape idea. It seems kinda silly to me. What do you think about it like in game?

    • We didn’t find any issue with Musketeer Twisted Fate’s cape. In fact, given that his trenchcoat flows similar to a cape the effect isn’t much of a detour from his classic aspect. That’s not to say that he looks the same but it’s familiar enough while still communicating the Musketeer concept effectively. Withing the established context, we think that cape isn’t a problem and that it suits both champion and skin.

  22. Hey Zero, will underworld twisted fate come back this Halloween, wanna buy it. Thanks

  23. T.F., Jhin, Diana, and Talon are all getting Blood Moon skins, what do you think about it so far? 😀

    • Diana may be the most natural choice. Talon could work well as well as Jhin due to their dark roles. With Twisted Fate we don’t known. On the one hand, Underworld is a great skin so it could be great. However, Blood Moon could end up similar to it or not make a good fit. We’ll have to wait and see how the skins are implemented.

  24. please update this page as the blood moon skin has just been added ! thank you

    • Blood Moon Twisted Fate is only available on the PBE it hasn’t been released. When it reaches the live server we’ll prepare a review.

  25. I’m sure that all the skins that cost 1350 RP are called <>> and not <>

  26. Hey zero, will underworld tf return during harrowing? Thanks

    • It’s supposed to as it’s a Harrowing skin. It would be unusual and strange if it didn’t. You never know but in all probabilities it will.

  27. I agree 100% I got Underworld Twisted Fate out of a chest and loved it so much, so I hopped on here to see what you thought and I completely agree it’s a 5 star skin!

    • Indeed, it does a lot of things well and the theme comes across quite clearly and appealing. While it’s true that Twisted Fate doesn’t have many elaborate skins Underworld shows that something good can be done.

  28. Blood moon is the best.

  29. Hey zero lets say underworld tf doesn’t exist AND blood moon is 975 rp.. would you give blood moon 5 stars instead? what im saying is.. probably blood moon is getting unfavorable reviews because underworld was the “original” skin and its pricey too. I have rps that can buy either of them and i have to choose only one. So can you help me choose?

    • Truth be told, we don’t see Blood Moon Twisted Fate getting five stars even if Underworld didn’t exist and its price was 975 RP; four perhaps. It’s not a matter that Underworld came first but that it does the supernatural gambler much better than Blood Moon does the dark magician role. Even if the price went down it’s not focused enough as it seems to show a flashy illusionist personality along magic that seldom is sinister.

In few words, Blood Moon doesn’t fit the associations of that line of skins. Furthermore, even if we ignore that the skin looks good and has some interesting additions but it’s not clear what it’s trying to show. It’s some sort of showy wizard with a touch of dark magic. Besides, the skin doesn’t always make the most of the choices the design had made. If it’s going to be flashy why isn’t it consistently so across abilities?

We did and still recomment Underworld. However, if you can get Blood Moon on sale it’s a better proposition. With Underworld a sale is improbable and you’ll have to wait till Harrowing/Halloween. If you like Blood Moon better then do buy it; you have to enjoy the skin. It does have appeal even if we find many aspects that could’ve been better developed. Supposing that Underworld didn’t exist would make Blood Moon a more interesting and maybe also attractive skin but the problems would remain.

      • Hmm, I get your point, I guess i’ll wait for the underworld then, thanks zero.

        • At any rate, you can consider Blood Moon Twisted Fate on sale. Truth be told, Underworld is very well done. Everything come together into a cohesive whole. With Blood Moon it’s not always clear the direction the skin aims to follow.

  30. When is underworld going to be on sale, I really want it.

    • Oh and the BM skin is atleast 4 stars.

    • Underworld Twisted Fate will most probably be on sale by the end of October around Halloween; in the Harroween event. We have to disagree on Blood Moon Twisted Fate. We like what the skin could become but that’s different from what the skin really is.

  31. What are your opinions on the new pulse fire skin for twisted fate?

    • What we’ve seen on the preview has potential but seems sparse and a bit flat. We should see the whole of what the skin has to offer but we aren’t impressed by what’s been shown.
