Introduction: We Wait and Watch
“We are the Eternum, we have been watching.” The Lord repeated that phrase in his mind time and again. The castle had become silent and out of the window only desolation was visible. He went out but the chilly air didn’t refresh him. It merely stung at his body ignoring the ornamented armour that was his pride. He had no choice, he would have to ask for the help of the neighbouring kingdom. Perhaps that King would know more about the apparitions that broke his sleep and tortured his mind.
The visions didn’t stop as the landscape changed from the gloomy surroundings of his castle to the nauseating vibrancy of green fields. “Between what is seen when I open my eyes and when I close them I don’t know which image is worse.” He knew, though. He certainly could stand the jolly rhythm of nature but the twisted imagery in his mind threatened to collapse his sanity at any moment. Arriving at the castle his imposing frame and fame was introduction enough.
The King was unexpectedly cordial and surprisingly interested. He listened with attention and even quieted some of the, unavoidable, debonair guests that wanted to bask in the importance of such a visit. He asked for his advisors and a search was started on the kingdom for information on these ‘Eternum’ but to no avail. Whoever knew or whatever could be a source of knowledge wasn’t to be easily revealed.
After a week, the Lord was agitated and restless. He couldn’t stay much longer away from his realm and yet he didn’t dare return. The vision had slowly weakened and his health was improving but he dreaded the optimistic joy of life; despite the heavy hand of the cold. Packing his things word came of a last minute discovery. He joined the King at the throne room and listened: “A creature appeared, here and there. It seemed to swim under the ground. It left strange markings all over the land. It’s red glowing eyes were not something of this world, Lords.” The nervous voice of the witness didn’t leave room to ambiguity. There was something much bigger than the petty squabbles of a few small nations and its emissary had left a message for them; carved on their very own land.
