Introduction: An Offer Between Friends
“Sir! We have a situation on the coast.” “Deploy the teams.” “They’ve been already deployed and are currently unavailable, Sir.” The stern soldier saw his expression melting into worry as his superior stared with wild eyes. “Take me there.” They arrived at the beach and saw the sand riddled with partially consumed vehicles and weapons. Of the soldiers, there was no trace; not even footsteps on the sand. “Where are the troops?” “Eaten, Sir.” Anybody else in the same situation would’ve questioned the sanity of the soldier. Seeing the monster emerge from the waters and vomit caustic fluids over them was proof enough that it wasn’t a psychiatric matter.
They ran as fast as they could while the creature happily munched the tires of the jeep, the leather cover of the seats and everything organic in sight. They would’ve been next. “We need a plan.” “Sir, how about we ask the locals? They should know about this.” The Commander asserted and followed the soldier to the nearby pub. They received directions to a certain house, too close to the coast for their liking, which was inhabited by a certain lady whom could know someone that could help them. Such a train of possibilities was far from the usual certainties that an army should conduct by. However, options were too limited to complain.
The lady herself was waiting for them in a small, cosy dining room; they had the sensation that it had been specially arranged for this particular meeting. “Do you know the situation?” spit the Commander. “There’s a solution, but it will cost you.” “Name the price.” “It’s not monetary as you obviously are inclined to think. Let’s just say that from now on, you owe me one. One day, I’ll need a favour and you’ll give a hand. No questions, no conditions. Just as I ask and place none.” The Commander knew that business with any organization outside the army had to be strictly regulated. He also knew that there wasn’t much army left. “Alright, but I reserve the right to decline to offer help if the circumstances are dishonourable in any way I see fit. That’s absolutely not negotiable.” “Fine, I think we have a deal.”
The soldiers emerged from the house to see that there was already some movement around the city. Shifty eyes and murmured secrets met quickly as the chain of favours produced a little knight in not too shiny armour. The knight looked at the beach and saw the monster still enjoying his, once, four-wheeled meal. He sprung into action by running towards the creature. He hopped on the creature and hugged it tightly; making it turn bluer than it was. The alkaline drool falling from its mouth had no effect on the metal plates. The being struggled to break free but the knight had surprisingly strong arms for his size.
In the heat of the hug, the knight got careless and the wet critter managed to slip away. It ran passionately into the ocean and disappeared in seconds. The knight was left sitting on the sand with tears running down his helmet’s visor. The Commander had his mouth partially open; something he rectified before correcting such inappropriate behaviour on his subordinate. After a short while the lady walked towards the knight, kneeled and said something to him which brought new joy to him. The soldiers could only suppose: “must’ve been an offer he couldn’t refuse.” Truth differed. The knight could be heard by the lady, while running around in pure happiness, chanting “I’ll wait friend, be back soon!”
