Snow, snow everywhere! Well, not in Shurima at least. A white coat has covered the whole town so it’s only natural that everyone wants to join in the fun. Decorate the façade with ice snowflakes, bring your poro out and leave a snowy trail as you slide with your sledge. It’s the time of snow everywhere, around these latitudes actually, so brave the cold and have a day on the snow.
|Concept:||Sivir as an ice warrior.|
|Model:||New model for Sivir and her boomerang.|
|Particles:||New particles for Boomerang Blade, On the Hunt, auto-attack and recall.|
|Animations:||New recall animation.|
|Sounds:||New sound for her recall.|
|Splash Art:||The background is a mess of ice with the touch of a blizzard. You can recognise the hint of snow-covered trees but besides that there’s nothing. As a setting it provides a place for Sivir to be but it’s nothing more than a frame. Sivir is nicely depicted with bright colours and ample use of lighting effects. Her boomerang also displays a great amount of detail like cracks and dents, perhaps too deep cracks, along glittering edges and snow. The result is attractive but also a bit artificial; in fact, her skin looks plastic and the fur too solid. On top of that, her face doesn’t look like Sivir. Even though her features vary wildly between splash arts it should resemble her classic look yet it seems like a different person. The fact that her arms and legs are difficult to discern and appreciate the elements incorporated on them is just another point on the list. On the whole, it manages to be an eye-catching spotlight yet it feels as if that was all that mattered.|
|Conclusion:||Snowstorm Sivir is a skin that takes a predictable path in its implementation: the sexy ice warrior. In spite of the hardships of cold weather, the irreplaceable cleavage and open dress don’t seem to pose a problem. It’s true that an ice warrior is fantastic enough that sexy clothes are a possibility. Yet, it seems like a missed opportunity not to have chosen a more practical route. Besides, Sivir seems like a serious warrior and hails from the desert. With that stated, the new boomerang is a great choice that suits the theme perfectly. The same can be said about the new, sublte particles on her auto-attack Boomerang Blade and On the Hunt but her other abilities seem like they would’ve welcomed an icy touch. In spite of its issues, Snowstorm Sivir is a charming skin with a unique identity; mainly thanks to the snowflake boomerang. However, it’s reasonable to wonder if an extra layer of polish and realism could’ve made it excel.|
|Concept:||Lulu as an ice sorceress and Pix as a poro.|
|Model:||New model for Lulu, Pix and polymorphed enemies.|
|Particles:||New particles for Pix, her staff, abilities and auto-attacks.|
|Animations:||New flying animation for Pix and new recall.|
|Sounds:||New sounds for Glitterlance, Whimsy, Help, Pix! and recall.|
|Splash Art:||The monochromatic tones of this piece manage to present a fitting even if unsurprising setting. The background consists of a reunion of poros in a forest gathered around Lulu. The premise lacks depth just like the background but stands as an effective frame. Actually, the general tone of the piece is a bit cartoony but attractive nonetheless. Lulu’s magical display breathes some life into the piece along her bright eyes and clear smile. Her clothes are nice when they can be seen like the fur or the metallic decorations on her hat. However, the magic spectacle covers most of her coat. On top of that, her staff seems completely absent. Conversely, Pix can be wholly appreciated with sensible fur but a puzzling expression. In the end, it’s a splash art that successfully centres the attention on Lulu and Pix. Every element works towards that aim, even the colours, but it leaves a flat aftertaste of monotony.|
|Conclusion:||Winter Wonder Lulu is a very focused skin with a theme specifically spread over every aspect. From the clothes to the snow particles almost everything is linked to snow and ice. Some elements are more direct than others: for instance, the snowflake shield in contrast to a poro Pix. Nonetheless, it’s a very consistent skin even if unoriginal and a bit homogeneous in terms of colours. Still, when taken as the sum of its parts it’s a very satisfying and effective skin that not only communicates its idea well but is also attractive. In the end, this is a great skin for the Fae Sorceress but sadly too expensive for the features it provides. However, as it packs all of Lulu’s mischief with a different flavour it’s certainly recommended while on sale.|
|Concept:||Singed enjoying a day in the snow.|
|Model:||New model for Singed.|
|Particles:||New particles for his Portablizzard backpack and abilities.|
|Animations:||New animation for his Portablizzard backpack and recall.|
|Sounds:||New sounds for Poison Trail, Mega Adhesive, Insanity Potion and recall.|
|Splash Art:||The blurry background barely allows the setting to be seen. There are trees, snow, a burrowed yordle and a flying Ziggs but it seems rather empty while the yordles stand as mere decoration. Singed’s charge is evident but also feels unnecessary. His clothes appear a bit dull as the surfaces look flat due to the shading and his face is also peculiar as it might be too sinister for the context. Singed may be far from a good-natured chemist but his visage seems exaggerated. When taken as a whole, the piece manages to depict Singed in his snow day gear but doesn’t go beyond that. It tries to fit him in a relevant place but the unlinked elements are nothing more than a frame.|
|Conclusion:||Snow Day Singed is a skin with a clear funny vein but, fortunately, it’s more than that. It also gives a plausible idea of how a person would ready to spend a day on the snow. There is a certain degree of mad genius at work but it all, forcefully, adds up to be more than a mere joke. The clothes and snow gear are reasonable and while they might seem a bit flat when inspected they fulfil their role well. Thus, when the snow particles and sounds are added the skin comes to life with a consistent and distinct style. The abilities’ adaptation is functional with a distinct feel but without breaking new gorund.
Therefore, it’s a very good skin but not perfect: the rackets seem unnecessary, the colour palette could’ve been more varied and brighter while the abilities are rather conservative. Regardless, Snow Day Singed does what it sets out to even if in a convoluted way. It has some rough edges, which are more than just apparent, but in general it’s a great skin for the Mad Chemist.
This set of skins is quite good though not perfect; which is sad as they are rather close. The recommended skin is Snow Day Singed as his funny style manages to be more than a joke. The particles are eye-catching and the sounds distinct but not all abilities benefit from them. Furthermore, the clothing is flat and the gear somewhat forced. On the whole, it’s more than the sum of its parts but would welcome some extra polish.
Another good option is Winter Wonder Lulu but only due to its release discount, which prices it at 975 RP. The skin wraps both Lulu and Pix with an appealing winter theme that is distinct, consistent and satisfying. Yet it doesn’t provide enough to justify 1350 RP. However, at 975 RP, if you want only one skin from this set, Winter Wonder Lulu surely stands out.
Lastly, Snowstorm Sivir is certainly good but it goes the expected way of revealing clothing despite suitability. It’s understandable but also a tad unfitting for her personality and origin. Nevertheless, the boomerang steals the show so if you accept the compromise it’s a charming choice.
