Introduction: At the Press of a Nose
The large box was unwrapped and the little girl opened the gift: “A panda?” She hugged the little creature and looked at the guard near her. She suspected what was to come. “I want to keep it…” The guard looked down on the girl’s eyes and, having already discarded too many of her other gifts she knew that it would only break her heart to get only a few socks on her birthday. “Let me see if there’s anything I can do.” The guard knew that she had to vet all presents to prevent even the slightest risk to the girl but there were always ways around rules.
Late at night the guard entered the girl’s bedroom and woke her up. “Here, you can keep the panda.” The girl looked at the stuffed bear with a bit of disappointment. “But this isn’t the panda…” she whined. The guard shushed her: “Don’t, you’ll wake everyone up.” She pressed the bear’s nose and it transformed into the panda with a small flare. “Wow, that’s great.” “Remember this is a secret between us two. No one can know and no one can see the real panda, alright?” She touched the panda’s nose and it reverted into the stuffed bear. “How did you do it?” “I have a good friend who used the very same trick on her pet bear. Someday you’ll meet her.”
