Introduction: Of Dark Dreams
Wood, all around, it’s like falling through a tunnel of logs but bumping against the sides or the spiky splinters aren’t the real problem. They are ablaze, all of them, burn with quiet intensity. It’s a path of ember, falling, faster, burning, searing pain the body is engulfed in flames and then… Awaken, sweating, uncertain of surroundings until the eyes focus and the room, the familiar bedroom, comes into full view and a short sigh of relief escapes the mouth. That’s until the memory of the nightmare returns. Then the face distorts again and the pain resumes with renewed strength; as if it had only taken a break.
The nightmare was enjoying it, though. Assailing the minds of common people was boring. The assault on tortured and broken minds was more interesting and fun but also required wrestling with odious memories and annoying vicious circles of self pity. Not even the greatest tyrant was free from doubts. It preyed on them, letting them grow and gnaw at the subconscious until the conscious mind was shattered to pieces and only an empty husk was left. Shadows of former great, invincible men were left behind; such trophies. It was so pleasing yet they were so weak. There was no real challenge. Even the worst of them always treasured the sunny days of childhood or the lost kindness of a loved one. It was pathetic.
For monsters that had performed abominable actions their minds were a confusing pit of guilt, regret and fear. He liked the last part, especially. That gave it strength. That power could bend the stoutest will and never failed. It was odd, though, how those that produced the most terror were the most frightened themselves. The nightmare had heard it was one of life’s ironies. That was interesting; it had learned much visiting the minds of the wisest. Oddly, their minds tended to be rather difficult to corrode. There wasn’t much to work with and they knew how to interpret its visions of horror and even became stronger for them; the cheek. It was certainly a challenge and it liked those. The harder they are to break, the more they shatter in the end.
