Introduction: The Vase of Venom
The Prince entered the room and smiled to the court. His manners were renown, his taste enviable, his tact unarguable and his hold on power undisputed. He solved the trifles that were put to him as problems in scarce minutes: he always had the right answer. He showed wisdom beyond his years and it seemed irrational that he still held his place as prince and hadn’t challenged his brother, the favourite, for the throne. He had been asked, of course, to which he would answer: “I don’t need a bigger seat. The one I have is large enough.”
With the responsibilities of a prince came enough free time to indulge in many pleasures. Art, study, training: he was often shown as an example of what anyone should aspire to. Between his modesty, appreciation of the people and his ability to handle any situation he had become an indispensable ally and the most dangerous enemy. Sooner or later, someone would make a move. Even if his designs didn’t reach higher than enjoying the latest play of a famed writer with a delectable dinner and equally good company, someone would see a threat.
That morning he woke up and looked at his face in the mirror. Then he noticed the two punctures on his left forearm. He pulled the bed sheets into the air and the snake slithered through the carpet. It didn’t go far: his stool was broken in the same blow which opened the reptile’s head. He called his doctor, many more came, and news spread but only nonsense was produced. The Prince was dying, he felt his body weaken and he knew it all too well. It was bad enough that his brother had come to visit; he only did when in need of advice in dire situations. It wasn’t that different this time, actually.
Witches and wise men came and went to no avail. Doctors were rushed but the poison advanced slowly, paralysing the body of the prince bit by bit. His whole left side was useless but he felt entirely like that. His heart was starting to slow down too. He fell asleep in the afternoon and was that way for several days. Prayers, gifts and wishes of health came from all parts of the kingdom and beyond. Once such gift was quite peculiar: a jade vase with several flasks. Each one contained one of many different venoms. Inside was a letter by a seemingly unknown person with the simple sentence: “For when you get better.”
The prince recovered but very slowly. It took him months to be able to walk again and he tired easily. His days of vigorous exercise were over, at least until much strength was recovered, and he kept on thinking about the invisible snake despite his intellectual distractions. Unable to travel far and terrified of every shadow he spent his time in the palace, checking the gifts and letters received. One day he found the jade vase which had been set aside as an unwelcome gesture and inspected it.
He was initially furious at the tasteless joke but the name in the letter’s signature set his curiosity alight. He knew who it was: an expert in snakes and their venom. He wrote her that very same moment requesting further information. With the fear of the snake still lingering behind every corner he was ready to do anything to get back to normal. Any price seemed worthwhile but, would it be so?
