Introduction: Charge Full of Life
The android stopped in the middle of the bridge and looked at the peaceful waters in the distance. The stream’s twists and turns looked as whimsical as any natural behaviour and that delighted him. Yes, him, he had been given a male personality for some reason. He couldn’t understand why, it wasn’t as if he were going to marry: he wasn’t designed for that. In his mind it was just another of those human whims that so delighted him. Those were little irrationalities that made every day a never-ending supply of surprises and, sometimes, frustration. It always made his day to hear to the rationalizations of humans, they sure were creative.
He supported his body on the border and, essentially, sighed deeply enjoying the fresh air; he did like the freshness in the air. The city was too filled with chemicals and it blurred everything. Nature was like replacing a faulty circuit board: one felt renewed. He looked around and saw the new bot models hurrying around, no time to look to a side and see the river. Sure, bots, more fashionable than robot in this day and age. He shook his head, he sounded all cranky and old but he was old. He still remembered the old days when his engine was powered with steam and he had to place coals in his frame. Nowadays, it was a simple matter of plugging oneself for a few minutes. And these youngsters didn’t even have the patience to lay still for their batter recharge….
He straightened and walked through the bridge. He liked to reminisce but he had found himself rather nostalgic, yes that was the word, lately. It wasn’t that the old days were better, of course he wouldn’t dream of handling coal again; batteries were great. Things had become much more automated now but he also found that everything was automatic now. As if you didn’t even have to make a decision. Everything seemed to flow as a river and you just let the current get you from the present to the future, no questions or choices necessary; everything pre-programmed.
Many of the new models did have rather restrictive programming so he couldn’t blame them. Not all of them, though, there were advanced or updated models, like himself, that could be very well aware of the system that made this society work so, why did everybody seemed to be okay with it? Last time he tried to ask for a drink at a bar they almost branded him a lunatic, so to speak; human liked projecting their emotions on machines. Of course he couldn’t drink it, he just wanted to enjoy being at a bar, experience the atmosphere, be a part of the flock. They didn’t understand, they never did, and he found that there was little point in trying to explain things: people didn’t listen anymore.
Everything was pre-arranged so, if you didn’t fit, the system coughed you up from where you shouldn’t be and spat you to where you should be. Actually, he shouldn’t be enjoying the riverside, but he was. As if they could do something about it; or cared. What was another malfunctioning, old robot in their eyes? He found himself sighing again but different. Resignation? No, disappointment, that was the feeling that humans used. For all their whims and irrationalities, there was still something potent in a fully natural organism. Not many remained, sadly, and it’s not as if youth was going to listen to an old robot with his old stories.
Still, some did and he was glad that he could do a little difference. Speaking of which, he had to see an enthusiastic girl about some old stories he promised. She was so full of life and energy and curiosity that it almost charged up his batteries being near her. He couldn’t let them assimilate her and snuff out that bright flame and leave her a demolished human. She surely wasn’t going to ignore technology, we are swimming in it now, but that didn’t mean that it had to intrude into her own self. Now organics were regalia of a time long past; like the metal armours seen in antique shops. Well, not this time. If they wanted to get to her they’ll have to get through him. With all the enhancements he had made through the years that was something much easier to say than do. He felt defiant and rebellious and he liked it. Just thinking about her, her energy was contagious. He had to preserve that, for all time’s sake.
