Introduction: Frost Bolt
“Nonesense, utter nonesense.” The Lord waved and the servants dispersed. “I completely refuse to believe such a thing. What’s next? Pixies?” The Huntress had dressed lavishly for a meeting with such an aristocrat. She herself knew of the importance of looking the part. She also knew how difficult it could be to make stubborn people used to getting their way in life to change their minds. “I’m staying and nothing will make me back down.” She left. Even without permission to act she could stalk the woods’ shadows.
A single marauder appeared but this one’s outline showed the animalistic features of a canine. Normal bolts wouldn’t be enough to stop him; yet, she always preferred silver. One shot from her big crossbow nailed the creature to a tree. Unable to escape it ripped his torso pushing forward. By the time it was free of the tree’s forced embrace there was enough silver in his body that his blood became poisonous. He fell, twitching uncontrollably, to the ground. “I’m the dark you should fear, monster.” She dissolved into the shadows.
The Lord only heard a terrible, inhuman scream coming from the mansion’s surrounding forest. “Deploy the Mecha.” His trusted assistant looked at him expecting confirmation. “You heard it.” The study table revealed a panel which allowed contact with the warehouse where the metal beast was contained. The engineers received the order with mixed feelings. They were excited at the prospect of seeing their creation in action but realised that it could only mean destruction.
The Mecha rose towards the sky, the Huntress saw it and ran from the forest. “You can’t stop a swarm with a tank.” She reached town and hid in dark alleys. Moving was difficult when the earth quaked at each step. People were confused and dazzled by the titan’s vision. They didn’t notice the many other marauders that had entered the city and were tearing their way through brick and mortar; until throats expelled air and blood. The huntress tumbled between shadows and shot as many as she could but it was a matter of sheer numbers now.
The Mecha identified the invaders. Its crushing blows devastated whole areas. Strong defence brought ruin to buildings while each movement lacked sufficient delicacy to discriminate between victim and enemy. “It will kill us all.” The Huntress’ silver bolts needed to be reserved for the foes surrounding her but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to shoot through the Mecha’s eyes into the CPU. The marauders wouldn’t get her or make it through but the titan was another problem. She would’ve never guessed to be so happy to notice the temperature plummeting with cruel harshness.
The air itself froze and movement became difficult. She got sleepy, people started to collapse and saw the blue lady advancing through ravished streets. The Frost Queen spread her chilly presence over the entire region. She advanced towards the Huntress and gave her back to her. The air immediately warmed, she managed to stand up and looked at the Frost Queen up-close; people regained consciousness, meanwhile. Rumour and legend was before them. The marauders flocked to her cold flame with the mentality of moths. They got covered in ice and then snow until they became white mounds.
One titanic problem remained. The Mecha couldn’t indentify neither Huntress nor Frost Queen as either friend or foe so it decided on the former: the Lord’s personal choice. “If I can only reach its eyes.” “Shoot, I will guide your bolt.” The bolt flew up and gained speed with the unrelenting blizzard. The straight Mecha didn’t look down but was made to bow by a strong contrary gust. The bolt cut through metal, plastic and silicon and lodged itself into the main circuit board covered in ice.
The short-circuit made systems go haywire but the freezing tornado around it didn’t allow the weapons to release their destruction. The Mecha crystallised until it shattered under its own weight. A wind blew the shards away, landing over the richness of the mansion past the forest. People sighed, the Huntress vanished and the Frost Queen slowly walked away. Both rejuvenated the rumours and their legends grew larger than themselves.
