Introduction: Hazardous Nature
He approached the pool slowly, took out a test tube and filled it with the green, luminescent fluid. After putting a cap on the tube he looked around. The earth was eroded and dissolving under this alien rain. Fortunately, his suit kept him safe from the raindrops which produced a vapour when reaching anything organic; they cut straight through any substance. Since prehistoric times there hasn’t been such a disaster. The magnitude was overwhelming as it was eons ago but this time, it wasn’t a natural occurrence.
They had made it. He also felt personally responsible. As one of the leading scientists in engineering his designs had produced more efficient machines. However, that also meant they were cheaper and when before there was one now there were two or even more. He sighed and poured a drop of the green fluid under the microscope. “Let’s see what you’re made of.” He stared at the image for several minutes. He looked behind at the suit and inspected the surface. It was clean, of course, standard procedure. What was he trying to find?
“Acid or alkaline? Acid, no doubt.” His theory was promptly verified with a single, easy test. There was no way around it: there wasn’t some unexpected event that had suddenly disrupted nature and made civilization tremble under its might. There was no deeper meaning or hidden significance. The land was returning what it had received. Emissions had sullied the atmosphere so what could be expected but for the lands to receive in kind.
Those lands weren’t just civilized. Even wild patches of untouched earth were being lost. As always, the innocent suffer for the guilty. It was the legacy that unchecked development and rampant disregard for nature would leave for future generations and it was too late. There was no turning back now. The damage had been done. If only he had realised before, he could’ve done something about it. If only he had thought about consequences. Now, he could only hope for a few to survive and tell the tale, eventually.
