Introduction: Not Dead Which Idle Lie
The graves were dug one almost atop the other. The tombstones piled up as if branches growing from the same root. The necropolis’ population was booming. That was great news. It was an easy process, in fact. Simply sending the dead to bring more to their ranks was practically a self-fulfilling promise. The Lord of the Graves couldn’t be more pleased. With an army of ever-expanding ranks drawn from the inexhaustible pool of the living there was no possibility that anything could stand on his way.
The plan was very simple, which brought a smile to the cadaverous face of the Lord, as he remembered and enjoyed the details sat on his throne of bones. Simply assemble a large enough army to expand his little graveyard into a full city and start the capital to his kingdom of the dead. At first he had some qualms about making the living join the dead, it had to be admitted. However, studying the living and understanding their motivations he realised that many were better off dead. It truly made him feel bad, nauseous if that were possible, to see what the living were capable of doing to their own.
The dead had a much simpler structure: depending on the state of your brains, the level of your conscience and, thus, the rank. It was practical and always worked. Why the living didn’t employ a similar system? Then he remembered that the living also suffered from many other ailments like the need for sustenance and rest which sometimes was reason enough for evil. Sadly, that wasn’t as common as he hoped. Most of the time, they were evil through sheer greed. That didn’t exist beyond the grave. There was no good or bad, just existence.
The kingdom would be one based on existing and being in harmony with the land: a utopia beyond the grave; he chuckled to himself. Understandably, land wasn’t something easily acquirable but with a good plan he felt confident. The city was slowly turning into a ghost town and that was a good first step. That night, as every night, the dead were sent to hire for its ranks the many undesirable that roamed the region and turn them into more productive dead. Come to think of it, he hadn’t faced actual opposition from the locals or the regional authorities. Perhaps they didn’t mind the plan. Yet, the Lord didn’t hold any illusions, he knew that once land were to be claimed there’d be obstacles and then, his army would have to step forward in full. He was ready for it: centuries of planning wouldn’t go to waste. But we wondered: “centuries go by so quickly. Is it time enough?”
