Introduction: At the Museum
The silver blade glinted in the night. She looked at the Moon reflected on its surface then returned her eyes to the museum. It was still open and the animatronics were the delight of visitors from far and wide across the city. “At least they’ll learn something, probably.” she thought with less hope as each word crossed her mind. From the large windows she could see the animated skeletons pose, walk and sometimes even chase children; only to be easily outrun. She liked the museum. It was a small haven for the past which managed to keep technology at bay, mostly.
Unlike most she hadn’t any cybernetic implants and she was happy about it. It meant that she needed a lot of training to keep in peak condition so as to stand against the enhanced foes she usually met. It was worth it. She looked at the entrance and saw her target. He was more machine than man but it made no difference to her: the bigger they are the clumsier they get. She moved between shadows and before the man could make his way in she took advantage of a dark spot to make her move. It was so easy.
The tracker was installed and so, her job done. It was a simple thing, she had to admit, but it paid well. If companies wanted to pick each other’s eyes over patents and other stuff that was hardly her problem. Besides, in these cases the only thing hurt was people’s egos and she had had enough of that. She slid between shadows back to the vantage point which offered such a nice view of the museum. The children were still untouched by technology. She didn’t know for how long they would last that way but she was glad they could enjoy themselves unhindered for now. Sooner or later, the transition will start and, as it happens with radical choices, there’d be no turning back.
