Introduction: Before the Gate
“So this is the place?” “So it seems, funny statues, eh?” “Well, there’s worse things at the north.” “Really.” “At least it’s cold there.” They advanced hiding in the shade, trying to find some respite from the piercing sunrays. Beyond the statues was a gate, large and dry blocks of stone around a monolithic slab carved with rich designs of familiar shapes. They looked behind, “Doesn’t it look like the statues?” “Sure does, well, it’s only consistent of them to keep the same decoration.” There was a strange air, something unspeakable that prompted them to be cautious with their words.
The gate was an obvious point of entry but there was nothing evident about how it could be opened. The decoration revealed no clues as to what mechanism or principle activated the gate and granted entry. They explored and studied in silence as the Sun slowly made its way through the sky and the shadows of the statues flanking the entrance grew longer as if reaching, longing to touch the carved gate. They weren’t truly oblivious to this artistry but it was of little importance to them. It was not what was in their mind.
With the Sun sinking under the horizon the shadows on the statues gave them a sinister look. The faces became gritty with inhuman features that more clearly revealed an obsessive attention to detail; a monstrous attention. It was as if the sculptor had enjoyed the masochistic pleasure of carving such grotesque creatures with wanton carelessness for sanity. They hadn’t realised that they had been staring at the sinister faces for a long while. They were all alone, the Sun had fled from this company, yet they could appreciate all the details in the gloom.
They heard sounds, a sort of clicking as if pebbles hit each other. There was a certain rhythm, a cadence of sound that meant that they weren’t random noises: there was a will behind them. As they hypnotically stared at the faces something got in their minds, a message in unspoken words. “We are the Guardians. You will not pass, you will not be, we will be; eternally.” A few days later a party from the nearest town came to search for the two foreigners that had asked about the ruins in the sands. There was no trace but a journal was found between the statues with this being a description of their last moments. It’s strange to think they found the time to tell what had befallen them. But, perhaps time isn’t an issue for them now.
