It’s funny how your memories can appear out of nowhere. Here and now, under this bright, curled Moon resting among the stars I get visions of times gone by. Some I’d want to return and some are better left forgotten; if such a thing is really possible. The parties at the pool with friends in summer, that’s one place, one time I would like to return to. So carefree and peaceful, we just didn’t know what we had but you never know when you are young. You just never know, until it’s too late.
When we were teenagers we all wanted to have an edge. We dressed in dark clothes and went to concerts. We listened to hard rock and all that, acting all tough and important as if we could become something big with just looks. Such innocence, such times, but you are the only one who remembers, right Moon? You saw us then and you see me now. I’m not the one I used to be. We had everything and now, well, we are getting back on our feet but had we known better we wouldn’t have listened to their promises and lies. If only we had.
But we were young and naive and so for King and country we joined the army and fought to defend the values they said we were defending. Few made it through; it was a real massacre, for all involved. Once the smoke settled and we all saw what we had lost and what we had done it was just too late. Nobody won, nobody ever does in war, and the powers that be knew that. Even they didn’t have the face to declare themselves victors; too much was lost on both sides.
They signed treaties, they compromised to keep peace but of what use is that now. Only you and I remember them now Moon. Only us know who they were and as my time draws near I hope that these words and your eternal light can keep them all alive, somewhere. I count on you my dear friend. Memories are all that is left now to this old mind but perhaps those that read them and understand them could make sure that this is never repeated again. I count on you to light their way, Moon, you are the only one I can count on.
So the Moon shone brighter the night those memories were lost to paper and ink. She remembered and she would make sure that the world remembered, too. From high up in the skies she had seen it all, unable to sway the will of mortals, she simply looked down. This time, she would do more than look. She would speak, she would do and she would make sure that mortals listened. The time had come to choose her avatar and make a stand.
