Introduction: Wind on the Door
The white dress glimmered under the moonlight. The cathedral had been abandoned to a fate worse than neglect. It had been ransacked, vandalised and ruined by the elements. Still, it held, precariously, with a faint but constant intent. Anyone that passed by could feel that the building seemed to be waiting for something or someone. From the outside it was difficult to see the dress lying at the top of the stairs but it was visible if the wind lent a hand. When the door opened enough and the Moon got curious one could get a glimpse of what could’ve been.
In spite of many legends and stories there was nothing concrete; much like the graveyard by its side which was claimed to contain the tortured bodies of hundreds of victims of the Nightmare Butcher. Just like the dress, there was a tomb in the middle with a stone in the shape of a blunt sword. Heavy and dull it was said to have bludgeoned many to death instead of a more elegant and final cut to life. Some believed that the Butcher’s tomb was in the centre so that he couldn’t escape, being surrounded by the stare of his victims. It certainly was a curious arrangement and no one really knew what or who stopped the Butcher.
Those with inquisitive minds would probably like to dig further into these legends. After all, legends tend to be independent and seldom do they cross paths and nurture one another. In this case, it seems like the Butcher, after a particularly gruesome night of slaughter, took corpses to the graveyard to stick on tombstones and terrorise the locals. As one tale says: “monsters forget that there’s always a greater evil lurking beyond.” In this case, the wind opened the cathedral’s door and revealed the white dress under the faint light of a clouded Moon. Curiosity is a curse that ails even the worst of humans and can be the doom of any.
The cathedral was in much better shape in those days but the dress was already there so its tragedy has already befallen the unfortunate bride. Who knows what crossed the mind of the Butcher as he approached the dress which no longer lacked volume and contoured the fine silhouette of the bride. Every step towards her was a drop of hope lost on arid ground. His sack-like head was drawn forward to the bride but his body remained in place; held by barbed chains. She’s said to have toyed with the head on the palm of her hand and then thrown it onto the ground that had already dissolved the bulky frame that once wielded a feared sword. The details of his tomb are a mystery, perhaps a simple warning or tribute to the victims which were given rest at long last. One thing is sure though: the bride is still waiting for her groom and she won’t accept substitutes of any kind.
