Introduction: For Panda and Dragon
“See, I told you this wasn’t the way.” “I know what I’m doing landlubber.” “You said that five blocks ago.” The kept walking through twisting streets, turns and bends that defied memory and played with geography. They ended up in just another crossroads without any clear indication of where they were or how to get anywhere. “You are a terrible guide, you know.” “I know how to get us out of this tangle.” “It better be a great idea.” “It is: we’ll ask for directions.” They knocked on a few doors but it was obvious that there was nobody around; everybody was in the big celebration. Then she caught a glimpse of a little girl skipping away into a side street.
“Where are you?” They heard her asking in a loud, pitiful plea. They ran towards the street but she had vanished. Then they heard behind them a high pitched, sweet voice with a pinch of worry: “Have you seem my panda?” “No little girl, sorry, we have not. Do you know the way to the Jade Dragon commemoration?” “Yes, it’s that way.” She pointed towards the other side of the street to a mess of streets that looked like a flattened ball of wool. “Could you show us the way, please?” “OK, but you’ll have to help me find my panda.” “Alright, it’s a deal.” Her guide was none the happier by the negotiation but satisfied enough to finally get a way out of the tangle of pathways.
The girl walked with ease through the curled streets until they could notice in the distance the gleaming statue of the Jade Dragon reaching to the night sky. They approached eagerly, towards the fireworks, and marvelled at the reflections they produced on the statue’s polished surface. In spite of the large crowd assembled there were paths around formed groups to move with ease; curved in ways much reminiscent of the streets they had left behind. Moving towards the statue to get a better look at the performance they saw the girl run in excitement towards the centre.
Leaving some more people behind they reached a good view which revealed several performers juggling fireworks. One of them was a large panda dressed in red. The little girl went to his side and lit, with a mysterious fire that erupted from her tiny hands, the fireworks which the panda threw upwards for them to soar and delight young and old alike. The other performers joined a chain which juggled fireworks towards the duo for them to send into the night sky. Their colours mixed in beautiful patterns and lit the Jade Dragon as patches of paint thrown over its long body. Under this peaceful, cool night the celebrations continued with everyone none the wiser to the small but colourful twinkling in the statue’s eyes.
