Introduction: Head of the Snake
Red on white, corpses twisted and defaced left only as mockeries of the life they once lead. The spy moved with care among the carnage, clearing his footsteps behind him, he couldn’t risk leave any trace of his presence; especially with what his eyes beheld. There was no doubt that the King was a brutal lunatic. “All this death simply to keep his borders free of intruders.” There had to be more than such a feeble excuse. They were protecting something and he was going to find it. They deserved as much for their sacrifice.
“Quick, we are late.” “You delayed us, if we lose our heads I’ll make sure yours is the first to roll.” “Calm down, we are just in time.” “Lucky you.” “Lucky us.” Like a shadow he followed the two soldiers to the city. They sprinted towards the unexpectedly impressive cathedral where the booming voice of the King could be heard bouncing between walls. “There is no victory, we are only kicking waves against the sea but we won’t get tired. The seas will raise and drown the land but with strong legs we’ll swim and drown them all.”
He moved deeper, closer to the altar. He noticed the statue in the form of a mermaid behind. Tall and svelte, with larger than life proportions it towered on those present yet looked down with surprising mercy. “The skies will open, the snow will melt, and the seas will swallow everything. Only we are destined to survive. We have the guidance of the Lady of the Seas, we can’t fail, we have been chosen.” Soldiers and townsfolk shouted and raised their arms as candles were lit around the statue. “More wood, more boats, more ships, the world for us!”
Only one world rushed through the spies’ mind: “Lunatic.” He had seen megalomania but he was surprised that his stupidities were believed by so many. “It only takes a small crack to break a mind.” There was little that could be done to save these people. They were given to a fallacy that spread blood over all their territory. While they had their right to defend themselves they didn’t have one to play butcher. He had to take action, it was his duty; he recited more arguments trying to convince himself. It wasn’t easy though: he knew that one life could condemn many.
It wasn’t difficult, though, despite the barbarism displayed in battle. The kunai flew swiftly and lodged itself in the neck of the King. The fool obviously took it off which let the veins contents flow out. Swift and silent like a reflection on the snow he scampered away. He didn’t stop to examine the ruckus or gather any additional information about their forces. Only a wasted second was enough. Leagues away from the border he looked back and stopped to catch his breath. They wouldn’t be following him so far; even if they had found his footsteps and made some sense of the maze of traces he had left. “Is this the greater good?” He walked back to base knowing that no more blood would be spilled but that the main body of the people could be lost if they didn’t find a new head.
