Introduction: Rebels Before Revolution
“Fine, if you don’t want to help me then I’ll do it myself.” The dame left the court as the aristocrat waved with a smirk. The fool didn’t realise what he was doing. She had only one ally left, one she’s been at odds with for a while. When she arrived at her house she found the mystic wearing a kimono and meditating under the Sun. “I know why you’re here and I will help you despite our differences.” “You know well enough what’s at stake, our disagreements mean nothing.” “Sadly, you are right.”
They walked through the streets towards the central square. A crowd was assembled around the man of machines. His latest creations were the talk of the city and his theories and suggestions revolutionary yet alarming. Many had joined his path of mechanisation, turning themselves into tools for his designs; or so it was told by disbelievers. The ladies belonged to a different world, one where magic was all too real and machines were toys. He had proved them all wrong: this weren’t toys and the implications of his revolution endangered humanity itself.
Standing in front of the now fully synthetic body the man knew why they were there. “You can’t stop this revolution. The glory of the machines will better the lives of all. The world will be changed forever and it will be one without human error.” “It will change but at the cost of free will. I have seen it, your path only leads to a void of simple action and reaction.” “Do you think we will stand by and merely let you flatten the whole world into your iron fist?” “You can’t stop me. I have the approval of the royals, lords and ladies, merchants and customers. Your objections are mere ignorance. You shall be changed and you will see.”
A familiar aristocrat with a recognisable smirk took a step forward from the crowd. “You have permission to offer but not to force or enforce your vision. Don’t forget that my tin friend.” He looked with the same smugness at the ladies. They had left and he trailed behind, he whispered catching up to them: “I couldn’t speak freely at court but we are in far more danger than any of us think. What you image is only a fraction of what he has already engineered.” They looked at him with distrust and shared a look of disbelief. “Come with me, the resistance is waiting. We need all the help we can get. If you’ve seen what I’ve seen, you’ll know…” They felt the sadness in his voice and followed him into a small house with a tiny door on the side. They went down through a spiral staircase into a dimly lit basement where they reinforced the numbers of the few rebels that refused to yield.
