Introduction: Abyssal Meal
Deep within the darkest waters undiscovered worlds open before eyes used only to the bright sunlight. Under such circumstances, it’s not unusual for the odd manatee to find a cave full of delicious grass and lettuce. One would venture forward, enjoying the treat, tasting fresh and delicious leaves. When it looks back, there’s no exit to be found. Hour after hour of eating seldom teaches restraint. The minutes accumulate and hunger gives way to a more precious need: breathing. Weak sunlight gets in from small holes on the cave but the bulky frame of the manatee is incapable of fitting through. The muscles tighten, the lungs inquire but there’s only water to be found.
The manatee looks around, almost spinning. It notices a plant it liked and goes near, the taste is fresh on the mind. It continues through that venue and notices more dishes present in the recent meal. It speeds up the swim, with more recognisable vegetables giving way to others. The cave divides, it stops and watches; inhaling is repressed with effort. To the right, there’s a shape seen before. Not often but sometimes bright bulky creatures come down and stare at the surroundings and also animals. This was the way. It bursts forwards and presses on with determination.
The darkness slowly wanes, light takes over and the entrance of the cave is visible. The manatee springs on the surface and takes one deep breath only to be back underwater immediately. It submerges fast, memory unfailing, the path to the cave is retraced. The tasty buffet is still waiting and the manatee pounces voraciously on the delicious vegetation. It still dares venture far into the cave but with every excursion memory retains the chaotic layout. After a few repetitions the cave becomes home, one full of food that would last for the many hours necessary to feed. The stomach full, the manatee floats near the cave in a well earned slumber. The mind is at ease, when it wakes up again it’s clear like water where to go for dinner.
