Introduction: Chasing Spells

“No more sweets!” The yordle’s sad face is more eloquent than her words. “The mighty spell I use to give the unique finish to the cupcakes has been stolen. I can’t cook anymore without it.” The Royal Guard listens with reverence, as if something terrible had befallen an important dignitary; in a way it has. The hopping cupcakes are a delicacy unique to this shop and there’s nowhere else where they can be bought. “But, how could a spell be stolen in the first place?” The inquiring Royal Guard gets an answer she didn’t want to hear: “The magic is gone, without it it’s just a bunch of silly words.” “Whoever is responsible I’ll catch them”, the Royal Guard resolves to go beyond her duty to restore the spell to the righteous owner. “I may even get a sweet reward if successful… Enough thinking, time to work.”

The Royal Guard severely scrutinizes the area and extensively questions potential witness. “There’s always somebody who sees something.” It took a while but she did found useful information: a shadow ran across the plaza late at night. There weren’t tracks left but a sweet aroma lingered in the air. Trusting her nose more than her logic she followed through the plaza towards a hostel that had seen better times. It was a decent place but there had been some tough times recently and the lack of tourism was felt. She went right in and extracted all information the receptionist-owner didn’t want to have. With feet like paws she climbed the stairs towards a specific room. She lounged inside but found no one. Then a flash of light, blindness and a shadow that escaped to the streets. The sweet smell followed the shadow and behind went the Royal Guard with slowly recovering eyes and a feisty nose.

The shadow slowly turned to a blur and as more details become visible the Royal Guard recognised the clothing of the trade: it was a spellthief. Not a common one this one, unlike most who relied on stolen magic this one had some of their own. She left the reasoning behind, she needed to concentrate. Her instincts took over and she hunted her prey like a predator; such focus paid off. In a couple blocks the Spellthief was shooting light-beams left and right but unable to break free from the Royal Guard’s grasp. Both walked, one stooped and the other straight up, towards the shop. The spell was returned to the cook but in the transfer another flash of light let the Spellthief escape. Not everything was bad, though. What started as a simple order to fetch some sweets to her superiors turned into an adventure with a little reward. As the Royal Guard walked back to the palace, a bag swings with an order of sweets in her right hand. Meanwhile, her left arm cradles a specially prepared order of just baked hopping cupcakes; all for her.
