Overview

As June scampers away four bundles barely arrive on time with five skins, one with six, at half price. The themes are fear, fire, police and history with skins that conform to varying degrees of success. That’s not important, what really matters is whether the bundles are worth buying. So, are they? Let’s see…

Legacy

Having no less than four legacy skins at 50% of their price is the biggest attraction of this bundle. The problem is the quality of what is offered. Both Underworld Twisted Fate and Blood Moon Thresh are excellent skins but Dark Crystal Ryze and Lollipoppy are a bit expensive for being just re-models. Besides, Reaper Soraka is a skin that doesn’t work very well: healer and reaper don’t mesh. Finally, Underworld Wukong is a disappointing skin that doesn’t justify its high price.

This means that it’s a very uneven bundle and while there are skins to like they come with others that aren’t as desirable. Considering that the legacy skins are offered at half their usual price it offsets part of their main problem. Therefore, if you like the idea behind the skins but find the price an obstacle this could be a good chance to get them. Just make sure that you aren’t getting anything that lets you down.

Infernal Alistar

For the most part, this straightforward fire bundle is quite good. Most of the skins have new and attractive fire particles that make them rather eye-catching. Besides, while flames are a traditional subject they hardly lose their charm. Unfortunately, Vandal Brand and Infernal Alistar are re-models that add very little to the theme. The latter also has a new particle for one ability but it’s a very brief addition.

In conclusion, this isn’t a bundle with much to offer. Most of these skins can be caught on a regular sale; in fact Dragonslayer Braum is on sale this week. The fact that Vandal Brand is legacy doesn’t change how simplistic it is. Therefore, unless you like all the skins, you are better getting the ones you like individually at a regular sale.

This is a tempting bundle due to the presence of the legacy Riot skins. While they aren’t anything revolutionary they are appealing and have their own interesting features. The problem is the Officer and Captain skins. Captain Volibear is just a parody so there’s nothing terrible about it except that it’s an uninspired re-model. However, both Officer Caitlyn and Vi are sexualized skins that not everyone will appreciate. Their attempts at humour are poor and they just end up feeling like a fetish.

In summary, this bundle is a mixed bag. The Riot skins are interesting but the Captain doesn’t help and the Officers have a dubious style. If you find the Officer charm appealing, there is some behind all the sex appeal, and the Captain doesn’t bother you then it’s an acceptable way of getting the Riot skins; but only if you do like them.

Going up and down on the rollercoaster of features we have skins that go from mere re-textures to full new-models with a few extra additions. The most elaborate skin is Dino Gnar but it’s also one that doesn’t convince with its forceful approach. The Jurassic skins fare batter due to the iconic skeleton models despite the adaptation lacking sense at times. Pharaoh Amumu is a passable reference that is as simple as it is appealing. Finally, we have the emo Frosted Ezreal that isn’t more than a re-colour.

This means that while there are some attractive skins there isn’t much reason to get them all unless you like them all. If you are only interested in a few then a regular sale is a better option that prevents getting any unnecessary skins. Pharaoh Amumu on its own isn’t a powerful enough argument and any of the other skins have already been discounted so patience can reduce the expense quite a bit.

  1. There seems to be a small typo in the “You Belong in a Museum” bundle. In the last sentence it says, “…there isn’t much reason to get them all you like them all”

Also, I was wondering, will you ever review the chroma packs? I realize they’re pretty much just recolors, but some recolors work better than others.

Also, I realize it’s not really necessary, but it would be interesting to see reviews of all of the classic skins / splash arts.

    • Thanks for the correction; should be clearer now.

We intend to review the Chroma Packs but one of the things we are trying to define is how to asses the pack that ask for a skin. Perhaps they should be no a category of their own due to this requirement. We’ve added the review to the To-do list so that we don’t forget.

The idea of reviewing classic splash arts is feasible but classic skins are our point of reference for the paid skins. Therefore, what would we compare them to? If we compare classic skins between themselves then newer skins and those after a full visual update have a clear advantage.

That is a problem that we are still unsure how to address. However, if we find a way of approaching those reviews in a useful way we’d review classic skins.
