“BATTERY LOW, RECHARGE.” The android can’t shake the obnoxious, blinking message from his sight but realises that it’s his own existence that is at risk. In spite of being in the middle of a bustling metropolis a simple blackout has made it a desert. Survival depends on a chance encounter with some energy, fast, but only the distant stars show any sign of light. Hopelessness crawls through his being and he’s both rejoiced at the new sensation as well as frightened. It’s a change.
Unable to find any alternatives, he stares longingly at the sky and notices clouds grumpily gathering. The wind blows, howls and shakes the city. The android automatically opens his emergency fans but has to close them due to the strength of the gusts. Predictable. At least he got a few drops of energy but it’s only a temporary reprieve. Water falls with violence so his body seals itself; it also means that no fans will be displayed even if the wind becomes manageable.
He notices a shadowy figure entering a building. Fully automated yet lacking any energy it’s strip bare of any security and so is an easy pick. At the top, the clouds bicker with thunderous arguments. His eyes focus on the electricity, salvation. He climbs the stairs with difficulty but after a couple storeys he finds that the uninvited guest has found an easier way to climb: a set of ropes with its own battery engine. He reaches the top in a few minutes.
Under the raging storm he extends his arms and waits for the turn of a friendly card. If only. He can’t extend his own antennae but he can hope. The air feels dry and the night cold, he doesn’t have much time left. Lightning is greedily consumed by the rod in the middle of the roof. Exhausted and desperate he uses his last slivers of will to uproot the rod and holds it high to the sky. The light of his body long gone his eyes finally turn off: a silver statue decorating an empty roof.
It takes some time but lightning had unsettled business with the rod and so pays another angry visit. The android’s body blooms to life again. More, more life. With further lighting visits his batteries recharge. Memories thought forgotten, stored away, are rekindled. His days studying ruins; walking fields, woods and deserts; learning from masters of many disciplines. He lives again and his past becomes his future. The batteries are full, he easily replaces the rod in its place and merrily soars over the city. The storm subsides, the lights return and the world wakes up. One year of charge, he’ll never let it go so easily again. This new year will be shaded by the new feeling that energises his body now: hope.
