League of Legends: Samsung White Season 4 Skins’ Review – StrategyZero

Samsung White Skins
Samsung White Season 4 Commemorative Skins

Samsung White has landed their hook on the Season 4 trophy and didn’t let go. The team came out on top of the competition to win the world tournament and now a set of skins pays homage to the triumph. The skins go from mere changes of clothes to more specific tributes so there’s ample variety. Learn more about the SSW skins by reading further in this skins’ review.

Splash Art

This is a straightforward splash art that sets out to portray the champions in a simple but dynamic way. It’s effective but that’s all that can be said about it. The background is, apparently, a patch of sky mixed with Samsung White’s logo. The logo is understandable but it receives too much emphasis, mainly because there’s no setting.

The champions all appear in daring action but they are only posing. Their stances hardly tell anything related to their personalities and merely appear for show. They seem to share the piece with unequal levels of importance though they all have their place. That means that for some it’s easier to get an idea of their new look than it is for others.

All things considered, this is the corollary of what previous shared splash arts have announced. This minimalist or even simplistic approach manages to present the champions in their new look with uneven success. It may be a serviceable splash art but it’s also plain.

Samsung White Rengar

Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Rengar wearing modern, casual clothing and gear.
Model: New model for Rengar and his blades.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Samsung White Rengar is a modest skin. Actually, it’s just a change of clothes: Rengar in modern clothing and that’s it. The addition of headphones only references the tournament source and the blades are, essentially, the same with a different colour. At any rate, the lack of a knee weapon makes him less deadly and he even looks uncomfortable in snickers.
All things considered, Samsung White Rengar is a passable contemporary set of clothes for the Pridestalker. It sets a simple objective and reaches it without any fanfare. That shows and makes the skin feel lacking.

Samsung White Singed
Samsung White Singed Splash Art Samsung White Singed Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Singed wearing modern, casual clothing, a logo shield and a trophy on the back.
Model: New model for Singed, his shield and canisters.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Samsung White Singed is a serviceable skin. It dresses the Mad Chemist with casual clothes, gives him a trophy for his back and a shield shaped like SSW’s logo. It’s an unapologetic tribute to SSW and nothing more. As such if you aren’t interested in tournaments or, more specifically, in this particular team then there won’t be much to like.
The main issue is that the sum of elements doesn’t end up in an appealing aesthetic. The skin is so centred in the tribute that it skips making the style interesting for a general audience. Therefore, despite being a full re-model at a reasonable price the result feels shallow.
In conclusion, if you are a fan of SSW then Samsung White Singed is a skin that has something to offer. If you aren’t then, sadly, there is nothing to see here.

Samsung White Talon

Category: Legacy
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Talon wearing modern, casual clothing.
Model: New model for Talon.
Particles: New daggers for Rake and Shadow Assault.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Perhaps without intention, Samsung White Talon makes a better job at offering a urban assassin than Renegade. It’s a fancier, more elegant kind also: if Renegade is the struggling one then Samsung White is the established professional. Regardless, Samsung White Talon manages to convey an attractive aesthetic that, without ignoring the requisite SSW tribute, accomplishes more than that.
The trousers might a bit too tight but the coat presents a different style. The new blade on his hand also incorporates a refined design that follows the general feel. Summing it all up, the clothes feel both modern and still useful for an assassin like Talon while respecting his personality and the intended tribute. Regardless, one gets the idea that form has been prioritized over function.
The new blades used for a couple of Talon’s abilities certainly help establish a distinct identity for the skin. The design is aggressive yet still reasonable even if a pinch showy. Nothing more is added but at this price it makes more expensive skins stutter to justify their price.
In the end, Samsung White Talon is an effective skin that succeeds at presenting a tribute to SSW as well as offering a different style for the Blade’s Shadow. For those uninterested in tournaments the skin presents a polished, contemporary assassin with a unique aesthetic. The classic base is still noticeable but at its price Samsung White Talon does enough to be a good skin.

Samsung White Thresh
Samsung White Thresh Splash Art Samsung White Thresh Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Thresh wearing modern, casual clothing and gear.
Model: New model and glow for Thresh. New model for his scythe and lantern.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and death plus golden souls.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New recall sounds.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Samsung White Thresh is a skin with a concept that certainly feels forced on the Chain Warden. The casual outfit has neither rhyme nor reason: it’s just splattered on Thresh and doesn’t even try to mesh with his identity. There is an adaptation so as to make all the elements work together but they end up being preposterous. It’s difficult to see Thresh as a modern spirit searching for souls. Instead, he looks like a caricature: a terrifying being in disguise; it’s not particularly funny either.
Nevertheless, the execution goes beyond the model to make the skin attractive. The new, mostly, golden particles have a distinct style that merely follows the model’s aesthetic. Thresh’s actions have a consistent look but there doesn’t seem to be an effort in making them be more than adequate. They seem uninspired and even plain. The recall is an evident reference to SSW snatching the cup and, even though it isn’t supernatural at all, at least makes sense.
Samsung White Thresh is a skin that offers a lot but that never seems to make its features work together to produce an attractive concept. It’s a skin that doesn’t go beyond white, casual Thresh despite the significant additions. There really isn’t a perceivable effort to either make it mesh with a fantasy realm or break the illusion and produce something modern.
In conclusion, as far as technical offerings go, Samsung White Thresh is a good skin. However, if we also consider the concept and its realization we find that Samsung White Thresh never reaches its destination; one it may not even know where it is.

Samsung White Twitch
Samsung White Twitch Splash Art Samsung White Twitch Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Twtich wearing modern, casual clothing and gear.
Model: New model for Twitch and his crossbow.
Particles: New projectile for Venom Cask.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his recall.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Samsung White Twitch is definitely a niche skin. Not only is it targeted at tournament followers but it also specifically pays tribute to a player from SSW: Imp. As such, the appeal of the skin is quite restricted and many won’t understand or care for the reference.
If, instead, we take the skin as a modern rat the result is acceptable even if unimpressive. The clothes follow Twitch’s style, the crossbow looks modern and there’s some contemporary gear but we have to stop here. That’s what the skin does which is adequate but nothing beyond that. In fact, that’s as far as the skin wants to go. There’s also the new recall but if you aren’t a fan of Imp then it won’t mean much nor make any sense.
Therefore, for all intents and purposes Samsung White Twitch is a re-model with a price that is a bit too high for what it offers. It’s not just the absence of further additions but also that the theme’s implementation is limited. It’s a tournament skin and doesn’t go beyond it but what’s worse it’s that it feel like a re-model with just a recall to justify its 975 RP price. This makes it a skin that lacks appeal yet asks for too much.

Conclusion

Overall, Samsung White skins are an uneven affair. Some skins try to be more than a tribute but they don’t always succeed despite additional features. Besides, there are some skins that are simplistic to the point of being reduced to a change of clothes.

The recommended skin is SSW Talon. The new clothing manages to display him as a modern assassin; even if a fancy one. The new daggers for two of his abilities reinforce the skin’s identity and so the skin feels different. For its price it’s a fine option.

An interesting alternative is SSW Thresh due to the new particles. The model doesn’t manage to be more than a spirit in casual clothing. Additionally, the particles, even if different, seem shallow. In essence, it’s white Thresh in casual clothes. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but it’s not particularly impressive either.

Finally, there are three skins that simply disappoint. SSW Rengar it’s just a change of clothes. Not only are they forced on him but the skin doesn’t even try to be more than that.

SSW Singed is a too centred on being a tribute to leave space for anything else. There simply isn’t anything else of appeal and the SSW elements aren’t that many either.

The last skin is SSW Twitch. For fans of SSW the Imp references will be welcome but anyone looking for something else won’t find anything. The fact that the skin feels like a re-model yet has a price of 975 RP due to the inclusion of a new recall, again for SSW fans, does it no favours.

  1. Excellent reviews, though the SSW Talon uses the Dragonblade splash-art in this post.

  2. SSW Talon has the wrong splash.

  3. I think the SSW Talon Splash was uploaded as the Dragonslayer Talon Splash by mistake.

  4. Nice review! Also for the splash art of SSW Talon I see Dragonblade, you should probably fix that.
