League of Legends: Heimerdinger Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Jan 102013

Heimerdinger, the Revered Inventor
Heimerdinger, the Revered Inventor

Heimerdinger, the Revered Inventor may be a champion of the League of Legends but where he truly feels at home is in his workshop. Still, sometimes the call to the Fields of Justice is imminent and in those cases it’s better to choose a good outfit to stand out among the turrets. After careful analysis of all the involved variables we have been able to isolate the best looks for the Revered Inventor. Give this paper a read and decide for yourself on the accuracy of the data.

Alien Invader Heimerdinger
Alien Invader Heimerdinger Splash Art Alien Invader Heimerdinger Model
Category: Legacy, Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Heimerdinger as a Martian invader and his turrets as ray-guns.
Model: Major model changes for Heimerdinger plus new model for his tools and turrets.
Particles: New particles for his auto-attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Diffuse and empty the background doesn’t say much. It could be said that it makes sense for a flying saucer to land in an unpopulated area. However, there’re only a few sketchy trees and some barely visible turrets to frame the ship. At least the invader in question can be clearly seen; though the fumes blur him a bit. Most of Heimerdinger is clearly depicted with good even if perhaps too oily shading. Nevertheless, the depiction catches one’s attention thanks to the intense stare. All in all, it’s a splash art with problems but that manages to display Heimerdinger in an interesting way. Sadly, his turrets are a bit forgotten.

Conclusion: As a former legendary skin, Alien Invader Heimerdinger is an interesting but ultimately lacklustre skin that can’t hide its age. The problem isn’t the concept but rather the execution in comparison to the price: it shows the technical merit of times gone by. Heimerdinger certainly approximates the classic Martian aspect but only his overdeveloped brain stands out. Besides, his massive brain isn’t exactly good looking; much like his face. The turrets compensate with an appealing design but some new particles would’ve helped give them a more defined identity. All things considered, Alien Invader Heimerdinger has a nice idea behind it but an execution that isn’t up to its price.

Blast Zone Heimerdinger
Blast Zone Heimerdinger Splash Art Blast Zone Heimerdinger Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Heimerdinger as a scientist after a failed invention.
Model: Moderate model changes for Heimerdinger and new textures for his turrets.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: While the smoke is a more subtle tool than a simple patch of black the result is the same: only a third of the piece has anything to see. Away from the centre of the blast radius things get blurry and it’s only in the central part where the action takes place. The idea is good: Heimerdinger suffering the consequences of yet another failed experiment. He does look horrified enough but also too human as well; like a little, blonde Einstein instead of what’s really in-game. The surroundings are simple consisting of just a wooden floor and miscellaneous mechanical parts. On the whole, it’s a splash art with a fine idea behind it that simply isn’t executed in the best of ways. So, it’s a passable but inexact spotlight for Heimerdinger’s look.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Blast Zone Heimerdinger is simply good old Classic Heimerdinger after just another exploding experiment. The skin doesn’t change much, just his head and some textures but it’s enough to reach the desired result. Still, the aspect doesn’t look very interesting despite the waving mane of hair; except maybe for dedicated Heimerdinger fans. Consequently, it remains a skin with an appropriate yet pedestrian concept and an uninspired execution.

Piltover Customs Heimerdinger
Piltover Customs Heimerdinger Splash Art Piltover Customs Heimerdinger Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Heimerdinger as a tough, veteran mechanic with combustion engine turrets.
Model: Major model changes for Heimerdinger plus new model for his tools and turrets.
Particles: New particles for his auto-attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This piece has quite an interesting background: Heimerdinger’s workshop. The room is filled with tools on shelves, spare parts, Hot Rod Corki’s copter and his combustion engine turrets; besides some decoration. It’s a pity that some parts are rather dark and others feel empty as it’s a setting with an immense potential. Heimerdinger looks good bathed by the electric light and confidently leaning on his turret. His depiction shows folds and rather good shading; even though the hair looks a bit waxy. The turrets seem rather blocky but that allows them to faithfully recreate the in-game look. On the whole, a very interesting splash art that could’ve been better yet is quite good in its own right.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Piltover Customs Heimerdinger doesn’t stray far from what Heimerdinger conceptually is and that may be a clever choice. The mechanic look ties in with his Piltover Customs workshop dedicated to vehicle customizations and that’s a nice touch for lore fans. In terms of appearance, Heimerdinger is practically fully re-modelled even though there are reasonable classic traces left; like his antennas. His new aspect isn’t actually noteworthy but communicates the idea well. The same happens with his new combustion engine turrets: they are nice in theory but look feeble and unspectacular when laid out. Still, the casual look provides the skin with a unique feel and the upgraded version of the turrets is quite eye-catching. In conclusion, Piltover Customs Heimerdinger is an appealing and interesting skin that does just enough to please fans; which is a pity as it could be much more.

Snowmerdinger
Snowmerdinger Splash Art Snowmerdinger Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Heimerdinger as a snowman with sledge turrets.
Model: Major model changes for Heimerdinger plus new model for his tools and turrets.
Particles: New candy bar for his auto-attack.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background is mostly a sky covered by flying snow. There is the hint of an ice tower or fortress even but not much is shown. The turrets are a fitting addition to the portrayal but their shots are all black in-game. Heimerdinger is well depicted with appropriate use of light but the shading seems a little rough. On the whole, it’s a passable splash art that feels like one third of a picture.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Snowmerdinger is quite basic in its execution: it re-models Heimerdinger, his tools and his turrets to make a snowman. The result isn’t bad yet not remarkable either. The irregular snow body is well designed and the look is fittingly comical, overall. The turrets are cleverly designed as cannon gifts over little sledges and stand as one of the skin’s more attractive features. Besides, they also have different colours that are chosen at random which is a great addition. All things considered, Snowmerdinger is a good skin that doesn’t do much to take advantage of its seasonal nature.

Hazmat Heimerdinger
Hazmat Heimerdinger Splash Art Hazmat Heimerdinger Model
Category: Regular
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Heimerdinger dressed against toxic waste.
Model: New model for Heimerdinger, his tools and turrets.
Particles: New yellow particles for his abilities and auto-attack.
Animations: New recall animation and suit opening for his robotic arm.
Sounds: New sound for his bottle auto-attack.
Splash Art: For dealing with hazardous materials Heimerdinger seems unusually relaxed in this piece; to the point of having a toast with himself. That’s not a bad thing as the splash art is as relaxed as his attitude. However, it also means that there isn’t that much attention paid to all of its elements, or so it seems. The background, specifically, is somewhat blurry and besides some waste and a big explosion the hazardous situation isn’t very convincing. Nonetheless, Heimerdinger is nicely depicted with good shading and attention to textures. While the materials look convincing they sometimes look flat, like the soles or the sides of the head. Besides, the laid-back attitude seems strange for Heimerdinger who is supposedly closer to a scientist than a lunatic; though they may not be that far. All things considered, it’s a fine splash art that makes a fresh and appealing presentation of Heimerdinger’s new look.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: The first impression of Hazmat Heimerdinger is that of a more complex skin that it actually is. That happens thanks to the potential of the concept which isn’t exploited as much as it could’ve. The skin seems content with changing the visuals but keeping the feel unchanged. So, with new models for Heimerdinger and his turrets along the re-coloured particles the wasteland scientist is made. It’s also worth noting that the model is clearly a modification of the classic one. This makes his gas mask move as if it were flexible. Add to that the top opening for his third arm as well as the limited colour palette and the skin strikes as funny; but in the whole extent of the word. In conclusion, Hazmat Heimerdinger is a skin with a very good concept that feels underused. It’s an acceptable skin and not a bad choice for fans of the Revered Inventor. Still, most of its charm remains in the idea instead of the execution.

Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger
Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger Splash Art Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger Model
Category: Legendary
Price: 1820 RP
Concept: Heimerdinger in command of dragons.
Model: New model for Heimerdinger, his tools and turrets plus new glow and dragon Pythagoras for his hair. New animated dragons for his emotes and recall.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack, emotes, high-speed run, death, respawn and recall.
Animations: Animated Pythagoras for his abilities and new animations for his auto-attack, critical hits, walk, standing idle, high-speed run, emotes, death, respawn and recall
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities and auto-attack, emotes, high-speed run, death, respawn and recall. New voice-over with new quotes when buying items, specific interactions with certain champions, starting the game and killing enemies.
Splash Art: A cave with a canyon behind or something of the sort, the background is too diffuse and ambiguous to be sure, is the place where many little, chubby dragons have made their home. A few of those dragons, in their entire diffuse cutesy, can be seen. They are appealing but also not as easy to see as they should be.
Heimerdinger seems blessed by a ray of sunlight which allows his colours, as well as that of the dragon that has just hatched, to be clear. Lines are precise so that moustache and, specially, hair look elaborate and convincing in their cartoony look. His dragon goggles show some timid decoration on the surface but the glass looks plastic and hardly translucent. Not much of Heimerdinger’s body can be seen due to the dragon. The leather gloves are good.
Overall, this is a splash art that ends up being direct due to the focus it places on things. There’s an appealing context to be enjoyed but it’s too blurred to stand out. Only Heimerdinger and the dragon are really clear but not much of him is actually visible. In the end, it’s the approach that prevents the piece from showing all its brimming potential.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger embraces the cartoony style expected and, without outright trying to be funny, is a humorous skin with cute dragons being the big selling point. This is directly seen in the model where Pythagoras is added as a dragon atop his wild mane of hair. The rest of the model is much less interesting with only the goggles made out of gold and decorated with dragon horns, it seems, to add to the theme. Bone treats as weapons is a clever choice to direct dragons but the rest is the same Heimerdinger with only a change of colour. The new turrets are cute, certainly, and effective but they don’t seem particularly inspired. They are dragons which shoot fireballs, act cute and fly: nothing new.
Particles have their moments. For the most part, abilities look weak with tiny, translucent fireballs which lack power and impact. The larger fireballs, the beam attack which dragons shoot, feel more powerful but mostly given to size. The egg indicators are clever, the trails of sparks eye-catching and the dragon hovering over an enemy appealing yet there are only a few interesting choices. That’s not to say that abilities look bad but they don’t catch the eye and can appear simple, excused under the cartoony design.
Sounds are nothing noteworthy. Of course, the expected flames and explosions are present but they seem muffled and lacking variety. Large fireballs, again, are an exception but the only one. Dragons and Phythagoras, mainly, also produce a number of chirping sounds which aim to be cute and add proper support for the action but nothing special.
Animations for Heimerdinger seem adapted even though they are new. The problem is that when Heimerdinger walks or auto-attacks, for example, he looks like a more comical version of Classic. Abilities don’t animate Heimerdinger and instead rely on Pythagoras for the action. The problem is that the main activity is a leap in the air and shooting something. For instance, when placing a turret with H-28G Evolution Turret or shooting tiny fireballs with Hextech Micro-Rockets the animation seems identical. CH-2 Electron Storm Grenade attempt at humour can be exaggerated but UPGRADE!!! is nice even if shy: Pythagoras flies with a maw full of flames. Aforementioned turrets are also animated, notably for summon, unsummon and attacks matching the identity of the skin but not adding anything to it. Emotes, recall and death, show the close relationship between Heimerdinger and his dragons with a few stabs at comedy. The result is uneven in the latter but they are the heart of the skin’s theme. Sadly, this all happens away from combat which is where most of the action takes place.
The result is that Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger, like previous, similar skins, centres its charm on dragons that only shine outside of combat. When in combat the skin seems weak with only some attempts at cuteness and comedy as their only offerings. That does have some appeal but certainly there’s nothing groundbreaking that really catches the player’s attention. For the appeal it has, the skin is good but the adaptation could’ve done so much more.

Conclusion

Heimerdinger is a champion that has room for elaborate and interesting concepts that often aren’t implemented in an engaging way. In particular, his turrets are usually the only element that gets modified along his own head and so end up defining each skin. The visual upgrade didn’t actually make any significant improvements, except for a lean coat of polish, so what once let down still does.

At least, there are a few skins that can be of interest to fans of the Revered Inventor. The recommended skin would be Hazmat Heimerdinger. The skin accomplishes a distinct appearance that draws from an appealing concept. The implementation could’ve done more with the idea but the result is, ultimately, good.

An alternative is Piltover Customs Heimerdinger. It provides an appealing and suitable concept supported by a good execution. If you want something more comical you might want to catch Snowmerdinger even if it lacks the requisite extra that makes a seasonal skin stand out.

The legendary option is Dragon Trainer Heimerdinger. The appeal is all in the dragons and their relationship with Heimerdinger but that all happens off-combat. When in battle the skin seems weak and not particularly inspired. The skin does have its appeal, nonetheless, but the implemenation has a lot of untapped potential.

The only permanently available, cheap alternative is Blast Zone Heimerdinger. Unfortunately, it’s rather disappointing: the concept is hardly innovative and the execution is just barely acceptable. Maybe time will allow better options to surface.

  1. Nautilus and Viktor next? I REALLY want to know which skins to get for each of them.

  2. can u please do singed next?

  3. Conclusion: There ain’t sh*t for Heimer. :[

  4. Which skin do you think would be better buy, Snowmerdinger or Alien Invader Heimerdinger?

    • Since they’re both going to be up for the taking.

    • Technically speaking, Snowmerdinger is more elaborate but the truth is that Heimerdinger skins leave a bit to be desired. Alien Invader shows its age though the concept is appealing. In the end, it’s better to consider your personal preference as they both feel lacking. As far as changes go, Snowmerdinger provides more even if the concept tries to be funnier than it is.

  5. I love the Blast Zone Heimerdinger concept and skin, but I wish there way a bit more to it. :/ Someone at Riot should give some kudos to Heimerdinger and the fans that love him. 🙂

    • Completely agreed. Heimerdinger has some good concepts for his skins but the implementations tend to err on the side of simplicity. With some luck things will improve with future skins.

  6. Will the overview and ratings for donger get updated? As of tonight and the application of patch 4.4 donger will be much more refined with a VU.

  7. Heimer VU! Looking forward to your new reviews Zero 🙂

    • We’ll update Heimerdinger’s review as soon as possible.

      • If I’m not wrong, this Heimer VU didn’t manage to increase any of the skin’s review by any stars?

        • Sadly so, despite the fact that we checked well we simply ended up disappointed. The problem is that all of the skins were merely polished but didn’t receive any extra work; which is becoming a way of wasting the potential of interesting skins concepts. Hopefully, future skins will be better options.

  8. Can’t wait for your review :3

  9. Hey Zero

This may be a (see name) but I just want to clarify whether Heimer’s VU is for his regular skin only or is it across the range? I didn’t manage to see much difference with his other skins (shrugs)

    • The visual upgrade polished his classic skin as well as all of his other skins. You are also right in that there isn’t much difference except for a leaner aspect. In fact, it seems like a missed opportunity.

      • Thanks Zero. I rate Riot should’ve done more with his other skins as you said: “missed op”. His classic skin is looking just as good, if not better than, his others.

  10. Hey Zero could you comment on the classic heimeys splash art plz.
Be great to see your view on it 🙂

    • Sure, the portrayal of Heimerdinger is great: vivid, colourful and dedicated to his work. The background less so: blurry and difficult to identify anything in it. The piece is good, as it does its job, but on the whole it lacks cohesion.

  11. Hey, Zero! I know the new Hazmat skin for the Donger has just come out, but I’m so anxious to see your opinion on it! I love the little inventor and post-apocalyptic stuff, so this skin was an easy buy for me. 😀 Could you try to review it soon? Thanks!

  12. I’d like to know what Riot changed in Hazmat Heimerdinger skin, perhaps they added some easter eggs? Thanks! you’re awesome btw! I’ve recommended this site for people who always asked me if “this” “that” skin is any good.

    • Glad that you find the reviews useful.

We haven’t noticed any extras except for the recall, which seems more like a joke than any sort of reference; as far as we know. They certainly could’ve made the skin more interesting even if it isn’t bad.

  13. The explosion in the splash looks like heimerdinger, and the soles have his face too.

    • You’re completely right. Still, it seems an item better used as an extra than the whole of the background. In the end, it doesn’t amount to much of a setting unfortunately. Thanks for the information.

  14. actually hazmat Heimer has a new sound effect: glass breaking sounds for autoattacking (bottle)

    • Indeed, but we were doubtful about it as it only happens when the bottle is thrown. Looks like a precise explanation is in order. Thanks for the notice.

  15. Can u change the icons for the skins? there hard to look at xD

    • also could u update the splash art for blast zone hiemerdinger?

      • We are working on that. As thirty-three splash arts were updated it’ll take a while but it’s something that will definitely be done.

    • They are there mostly as a link and very brief introduction to the skin. We are aware that they are very small but with so many skins we need something like that. Maybe we could change them for something else, a part of the splash art possibly, but with so little space there aren’t many useful options.

In the end, it’s better to just hop onto the review and check the splash art in its full resolution glory. No matter how little a piece is resized to fit its would lose elements in the process.

  16. Sugar Rush is coming up, and with that Alien Invader Heimerdinger will be available, and at half price. Is it better to get the half-price Alien Invader or regular price Hazmat?

    • For only 65 RP more, Hazmat also has new particles on top of the new model for Heimerdinger and the turrets; which is all that Alien Invader offers. The prices are understandably close so if you really like Alien Invader it’s a good chance to get the skin.

Regardless, you could always wait, with a lot of patience, for a Hazmat sale. In that case Hazmat is clearly the superior choice. The poblem with Alien Invader is that it’s only model changes so it might appeal only to fans of the concept. The are other skins that offer just as much, or more as Hazmat does, for a lower or similar price.

  17. Hazmat Heimerdinger

    3 star really ?

I just wonder to buy this

    • Hazmat isn’t a bad skin but could’ve been better developed. It tends to feel monochromatic and not to make the most of the concept. In fact, aside from the suit there isn’t much of hazardous materials. The particles could’ve helped in that regard but they are just re-coloured and even lack the variety of the classic visuals.

It could be considered Heimerdinger’s best skin but mostly because the others aren’t that good. In the end, if you like the concept it has some appeal. However, a future skin could very well be a better choice if it’s well developed.

  18. Can you tell me all the Legacy AND Legendary skins in LoL? I’m very very curious 😀

  19. Got Alien Invader Heimerdinger in a mystery skin chest 😀

    • Not bad at all. Considering it’s long past its prime Alien Invader is a skin to get with a deep discount. It still has its charm but Heimerdinger can do better; though his selection is far from impressive. Hopefully, the future will bring some great skins for the Inventor.

  20. What is best ? Wonderland Annie or Alien Invader Heimerdinger?

    • Both are skins that only modify the model of the champion and their companions; Tibbers and turrets. With that in mind, both Wonderland Annie and Alien Invader Heimerdinger are equal in terms of what they offer. Wonderland has the advantage of being based on a book which lets it borrow some depth. Still, it’s a matter of which champion and concept you like the most. Even at that, each champion has more interesting skins for a similar price.

  21. line 5 of Hazmat Heimerdinger conclusion, “nothing” is a typo should be “noting”.
