League of Legends: Amumu Skins’ Review – StrategyZero
Jul 192012

Amumu, the Sad Mummy
Amumu, the Sad Mummy

Amumu, the Sad Mummy is a champion with an overarching depressive feeling that is shared by all his skins. Not all skins are as successful at integrating this aspect of Amumu: some force the idea while others naturally integrate it. If you want to learn more about how to be a fashionable sad mummy, read further on this skins’ review.

Pharaoh Amumu
Pharaoh Amumu Splash Art Pharaoh Amumu Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Amumu as a mummified Egyptian pharaoh.
Model: Moderate model changes for Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This is a nice piece that portrays a fitting Egyptian setting. The background is nicely detailed with hieroglyphs and pictures following the Egyptian style. Not only the walls are decorated, also the throne is fittingly designed and topped by stone cobras. Amumu wears distinct pharaonic garments with elaborate and suitable ornamentation. Truth be told is hard to find fault in this piece; except that Amumu’s in-game appearance isn’t as ornamented. Pharaoh Amumu’s splash art is a very good piece and while it doesn’t amaze it’s much more than a simple spotlight.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Pharaoh Amumu adds a very fitting Egyptian look for Amumu. The attire is quite nice covering most of his body in brown and gold. Unfortunately, the colours are a bit mute and the design is quite simple. Therefore, the overall look isn’t striking and, actually, not really pharaonic. All in all, this is a nice skin, it could’ve been better but it provided enough for its price.

Vancouver Amumu
Vancouver Amumu Splash Art Vancouver Amumu Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Amumu wearing bandages with the colours of the Olympic rings.
Model: New textures for Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The ornamental composition of this splash art hides the real simplicity of the skin. A setting made up of starry, glowing, largely runed, magical circles. That’s all the setup we have and then there’s Amumu. His depiction has saturated colours, a comical but effective pose with clean but thick lines. The main aspect of his look, which is the new colours matching the Olympic rings, aren’t very clear to see. The single most relevant aspect of the skin is actually just a detail in the attention-grabbing portrayal. Thus, we have a splash art that knows that it has to be a spotlight but forgets about what it should be showing.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Vancouver Amumu is a very simple re-texture of Amumu. It does, to an extent, reference the Olympic rings with its colours. However, the reference is subtle and the overall look is a bit plain. In conclusion, Vancouver Amumu has an appealing colour scheme but it isn’t much of an Olympic reference or an interesting concept.

Emumu
Emumu Splash Art Emumu Model
Category: Regular
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Amumu embracing the emo fashion.
Model: Minor model changes for Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The setting is rather simple and also not very clear. It could be an old basement or favoured alley. The posters with two references to the central figure and one to a peculiar band don’t say much in that regard. The bandaged speakers are a bit strange while the pipe and nearby picture amount to little. What really matters is the presence of Tristana and Poppy in the background; with perhaps the suggestion of Lulu to the right. Sadly, their shadowy depiction makes little sense as it’s plainly clear who’s the star of the band.
Speaking of whom, the saturated colours work in the portrayal’s benefit to make Amumu much more interesting. He’s only wearing a few new clothes so the bandages are familiar. Still, the shading and pointless circle of runes give him a darker style. The microphone, like Amumu, seems superimposed on a more diffuse image and the shadows behind also appear lifted from a third piece. That’s why, while the depiction is good, the piece strikes as a pastiche made by three different persons. It still serves its purpose but it practically draws attention to its uneven nature.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Emumu is quite simple in its execution: a bit of hair, a tee shirt and a pair of fingerless gloves. There’s a little more to it than that: the hair is dyed and stylized, the tee shirt is printed and the bandages are darker. Still, it seems like the easiest and laziest solution was chosen to deliver the concept. Therefore, Emumu has a clever and fitting concept but an execution that lets down in every aspect.

Re-Gifted Amumu
Re-Gifted Amumu Splash Art Re-Gifted Amumu Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Amumu with a present for head.
Model: Moderate model changes to Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: The background appears overloaded with elements. From the lush Christmas tree to the wrapping paper or carpet unfolding on the ground; it’s too sketchy to decide. The background also reveals that it seems to be a partially modified photograph considering the right side of the tree and the front of the fireplace. In fact, the right seems to lack a proper background so the feeling of an uneven and even unfinished setting is present. The various opened gifts are simple and the interior of the one on the left a mere draft. The Annie reference helps a bit though it’s never explained in which way. Has Annie returned a gift from her friend Amumu or is she to receive a gift that Amumu received?
Moving to Amumu his depiction is functional. The colours are visibly saturated, the lines broad but the shading has enough detail to be convincing. The pose is simple and the sadness puzzling. The result is a brief portrayal that doesn’t have much to say and doesn’t even try to dress it with some additional elements. Therefore, the splash art works but in a minimal way. The photographic remains in the background are embarrassing and the sketchy surroundings further spread its shame. Perhaps that’s why Amumu is so sad: with such a frame how can he be expected to shine?
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Re-Gifted Amumu is a very whimsical concept that forces the notion of the unloved and avoided mummy. It’s also extremely simple in its execution: new gift head and ready to go. The result works better than it should due to the attention given to the gift head. Considering it’s a prominent part of Amumu’s physique it’s well designed and finished with an attractive ribbon. Still, the concept is a bit weak and the execution doesn’t really make up for it. All in all, not a bad skin but also not worth worrying about missing it.

Almost-Prom King Amumu
Almost-Prom King Amumu Splash Art Almost-Prom King Amumu Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Amumu wearing a dinner suit and a Prom King runner up band.
Model: Major model changes for Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: In spite of the relevance of the background there’s little that’s actually shown. For the most part there’s a stage, a curtain at the sides and a blinding amount of light that barely reveals queen and king. There’s so little detail that one can only guess it’s a prom from the name of the skin. Speaking about the royalty, the king is a mystery while the queen only broadly resembles Annie: it’s neither her dress nor her shoes and only her hair looks familiar.
It’s surprising then to find a rather good portrayal of Amumu. The pose is meaningful and while the cartoony style lends itself to a certain scarcity of detail the result is appealing. The colours are too saturated but lighting is nicely used though with highlights that seem too abrupt. The shading is soft yet surfaces don’t look like what they really are. This way, teardrops look like jewels, eyeballs like glass, hair like leaves, bandages like plastic, cloth like cardboard, leather like dull metal and the rose made of ceramic.
In spite of its problems, there’s a useful and clear depiction of Amumu before a meaningful background. The real problem is that it’s a good splash only in general terms. When we move to the details, they shine by their absence.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Almost-Prom King Amumu has an interesting execution because it’s a skin that gives logical proportions to his body parts; except the head obviously. That makes the dinner suit a better fit for Amumu; it even looks quite form fitting regardless of his bandages. The concept is a definite stretch and overall not particularly attractive. So, while the execution is good it simply can’t avoid the limitations of the raw idea behind. In the end, Almost-Prom King Amumu isn’t a bad skin but it also can’t do much to stand out.

Little Knight Amumu
Little Knight Amumu Splash Art Little Knight Amumu Model
Category: Regular
Price: 750 RP
Concept: Amumu outfitted with plate armour.
Model: New model for Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Little Knight Amumu’s splash art has a very nice background and a good depiction of the sad mummy. The background appears floral and nicely drawn regardless of the obvious lack of detail camouflaged as light. Besides, the stone with a broken sword is a good reference to Arthurian legend. Amumu is well depicted with good, though a bit opaque, shading and some detail; like the dents on the helmet. Unfortunately, the armour looks rather plain and the cartoon design of the boots doesn’t work that well. All things considered, this is a nice piece with a few subtle but relevant flaws.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Little Knight Amumu is a caricature of an armoured knight. The helmet is what stands out above the armour and that seems backed by the amount of attention paid to each part. While the helmet has an interesting, asymmetrical and decorated design; the armour is plain and simple. The concept isn’t bad but the execution is slightly lacking and uninspired. To sum up, Little Knight Amumu is an interesting idea that wasn’t fully realized. As such it is a just good skin with a lot of lingering potential.

Sad Robot Amumu
Sad Robot Amumu Splash Art Sad Robot Amumu Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Amumu re-imagined as an emotional, little android.
Model: New model for Amumu and new electricity for his head.
Particles: New particles for his abilities.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New sounds for Bandage Toss, Tantrum and Curse of the Sad Mummy plus processed voice-over.
Splash Art: Sad Robot Amumu is quite a nice splash art. To start with, the background is a great setting for Amumu to run away from: the foundry is well designed and full of robot pieces. While the fire and surfaces farther from view seem fuzzy and simplistic the lack of clarity can be attributed to the intense heat; so the depiction is passable. The portrayal of Amumu is great: the metal shines under the light but also appears rusted by his tears and worn from activity. The crystal cover and electricity of his head effectively give some life to Amumu to contrast his artificial eyes. In conclusion, this is an excellent splash art, though it isn’t perfect, it still is one of League of Legends’ best.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Sad Robot Amumu is a clever take on the sad mummy that mostly ignores the source material to deliver an original reimagining of Amumu. The new model is brilliant: the head is a spectacle on itself and the body has its share of nice touches; like the missing battery on Amumu’s back and the plug from his right foot. Moreover, the new particles and sounds reinforce the concept as well as the new robotic voice. Maybe Sad Robot Amumu is a forced concept but it more than makes up for it with its cohesive execution. This is what makes Sad Robot Amumu and excellent skin that can be enjoyed by any Amumu fan. It may carry an almost legendary price but its execution isn’t far from such a label. Recommended for Amumu fans and those that like a refreshing take on a champion.

Surprise Party Amumu
Surprise Party Amumu Splash Art Surprise Party Amumu Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Amumu dressed as a small boy with a cake on his head.
Model: New model for Amumu and new flame for the candle.
Particles: New particles for his abilities and auto-attack.
Animations: New bobbing animation for his cake and recall.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: As a shared splash art five champions need to distribute the spotlight in equal parts and, for the most part, that’s accomplished; though the effect is diluted. The setup is believable but some elements stand as predictable. The idea of a costume party is well chosen: it allows the champions to stay together while also adding multiple references as miscellaneous items: like the Urf banner, the bannana skin or the champion head balloons.
The selfie angle seems like a way to standardize and even freeze behaviour. A photograph in the middle of the fun is reasonable but it would’ve been more interesting to see how each of the champions behaves and what they do at the party. The spotlight is effectively shared like this and the champions manage to instil some of their personality with their poses but the feeling remains that more could’ve been revealed.
What can be an irking element is the ever depressing situation of Amumu. While his sadness is a defining characteristic he appears to have been left out of the fun instead of being a victim to his moods; as would be expected. Perhaps if he was in the party but unable to partake in the fun, hiding in a corner, it would be a better representation, and probably less cruel, of the champion’s nature.
The shading and lines used in the piece are correct even if the colours can look waxy in places. The aesthetic is stylized but in a fitting way that doesn’t detract from the picture. What does affect it negatively is the arbitrary and profound depth of feel effect. It might be a camera with a narrow focus but it also seems to clearly display certain elements from the background which are surrounded by fog, because they might be relevant, and not others; regardless of how believable that might be.
All in all, it’s a correct piece that does a good job at displaying five champions in a relevant setting. The composition is good, some elements are unsurprising and the impact of each champion is weakened but, ultimately, it works.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In essence, Suprise Party Amumu has a festive air with a sprinkle of the Sad Mummy’s temper. His aspect is actually rather pedestrian: just casual clothes over the classic bandages. The only things that stand out are a ribbon, inexplicably tied to his right leg, and a cake with a missing portion; that has conveniently landed on top of his head. Overall, his aspect is nothing groundbreaking and, despite his visible tears, Amumu doesn’t look particularly attractive.
The particles and sounds are the ones responsible for establishing the party feel. Bandage Toss is the most eloquent while Trantrum is serviceable. Curse of the Sad Mummy is interesting as it compensates its simplicity by providing two versions of itself: a happy one when an enemy is hit and a sad one when none are reached. Despair provides the counterpoint to the sober joy stated by the other abilities. It doesn’t help develop the party theme but colours the festivity with a good dose of classic Amumu personality; much like the new recall.
All things considered, Surprise Party Amumu is a good skin and just about that. The concept is fine and the combination with his emotional mood adds a different angle to the concept. However, the implementation doesn’t develop either aspect enough to be a significant feature. There’re some party elements and some sadness but in measured and limited doses. In the end, it’s a skin better left for dedicated fans of the Sad Mummy.

Infernal Amumu
Infernal Amumu Splash Art Infernal Amumu Model
Category: Regular
Price: 1350 RP
Concept: Amumu as a flaming demon.
Model: New model for Amumu and new glow of his head.
Particles: New particles for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Animations: New recall animation.
Sounds: New sounds for his abilities, auto-attack and recall.
Splash Art: For a background there’s only a diffuse setting which could be some volcanic area or some desolate region. The truth is that only a few general details are visible.
Conversely, Amumu is quite sharply depicted in comparison. Lines are clear and colours intense but also rather saturated. For example, his mane of flames looks rather solid, his metallic clothes waxy and the hook attached to his leg a bit like coal. The effect is actually interesting even if unusual and perhaps unexpected. It surely is a far cry from the simplistic appearance in-game but the portrayal surely catches the eye. In that regard the jump with surrounding lava helps.
All in all, this is a nice portrayal with a background that barely seems to be there. The style may not be what could be considered conventional but it’s interesting albeit unfaithful to the three dimensions. Still, it’s a good presentation card.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Infernal Amumu is hardly original and certainly straightforward yet appealing with its classic concept. The model shows him as a little fire elemental with a flaming head that should’ve displayed more prominently animated fire. The body is simple and lacking personality while the chain attached to his right foot is a classic remnant that is hardly excused.
Particles are rather good. The flames on his head are ridiculously weak and the use of chains a justification for the classic design. It’s particularly interesting that Bandage Toss throws another chain like the one attached to his foot instead of that one. It could’ve served as a weapon Amumu carries, drags around and throws to catch his victims: enemies and friends. Despair looks, frankly, quite weak as a sea of flames and it’s a letdown. Tantrum and auto-attacks are quite convincing in their display of fire. In fact, Curse of the Sad Mummy seems rather timid, unlike Tantrum, for an ultimate. What consistently catches the eye is the floating sparks left by the fire particles.
Sounds are quite good. Chains sound metallic as expected, they all sound similar but they are convincing. Auto-attacks are particularly appealing with their cinder sounds. Fire sounds used for abilities are good: they communicate flames well with a quiet, brimming power characteristic of a constant combustion.
The recall is a simple joke at Amumu’s expense; as is always the case. It doesn’t say much and fits Amumu more than the theme though it’s also coloured by the concept itself. Thus, it’s alright.
All in all, Infernal Amumu is a rather uneven skin with much fire and no demonic influences. It has several nice features like the approach to quiet yet constant flames and also letdowns like the ultimate. The adaptation ends up being rather good if not for those issues which dilute the classic appeal of the concept.

Conclusion

In spite of the numerous skins that Amumu has accumulated few are actually worth purchasing. Sad Robot Amumu is certainly the best skin: it’s an original concept with an exceptional execution but also price. Regardless, the theme is well realized and the result is an attractive skin with an appealing style.

In direct competition stands Surprise Party Amumu. This skin tries but doesn’t convincingly develop the party theme with a touch of depression. The model is unexciting while the particles and sounds are mostly adequate. This makes the skin a passable option but not a particularly attractive one.

Infernal Amumu has an appealing and interesting adaptation of a classic theme. As a fire elemental the quiet, constant fire that the skin adopts is attractive and the best feature of the skin. Unfortunately, as the ultimate demonstrates, the skin isn’t consistent across all its areas. This negatively affects the skin making it less interesting that it can be.

The rest of the skins pale in comparison and only Little Knight Amumu and Almost-Prom King Amumu have a minimal level of quality to deserve being mentioned. Either of them have substantial flaws but their concepts may still appeal to some Amumu fans.

  1. I agree with you, most Amu skins aren’t worth getting. I now consider buying that Sad Robot Skin, certainly looks nice!

    • Unfortunately Amumu’s skins seemed to rely on quantity instead of quality. Sad Robot Amumu is a definite step in the right direction.

  2. any chance in a urgot skin review because i am unsure to buy any of his skins

    • No problem, added to the list. Be aware that today ends a skin sale that includes Battlecast Urgot; which is an excellent skin. It’s a good opportunity to get Urgot’s best skin for half the price.

  3. Sad Robot Amumu = Marvin the Paranoid Android?
    Pretty subtle reference perhaps?

    • Very clever and nice catch. It could very well be a possibility. We’ll have to investigate a bit more and if necessary we’ll update the review with the reference. Thanks for the information.

  4. Zero why is Sad robot amumu rated 4 stars in the amumu page and rated 5 stars in the sales page?

    • Sad Robot Amumu’s first sale was made while its price was 975 RP and so it offered a better value. Currently, it remains a great skin but the high price affects its rating.

  5. Zero, first I want to say I greatly thank you for all of your hard work, all these reviews are really handy and I look into them every sale!

Second, Vancouver Amumu is not just “an appealing colour scheme” without “much of an Olympic reference”. His color scheme is direct reference to the logo of Winter Olympics 2010 – http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a7/2010_Winter_Olympics_logo.svg/155px-2010_Winter_Olympics_logo.svg.png
Is it enough for 3rd star? Dunno, but it is nice to know that there really is something behind this skin πŸ™‚

    • Not at all, glad that you like them.

You make a very good point that we didn’t know about, thanks for the information. We have to admit that the look is still somewhat plain for a re-texture despite the low price. We don’t know if the reference would be enough to warrant a third star but it surely is something that needs to be corrected.

  6. Zero, i got re-gifted Amumu at 490(due to the mystery box) but i already have Sad Robot Amumu. Do you think it was worth it? It surely does give me a better “aura” when playing it but so does Sad Robot.

    • And same thing happened with katarina, I already have slay belle katarina and just got kitty kat katarina from mystery box and i am asking the same question, was it worth it?

      • Considering Kitty Cat Katarina’s price of 975 RP getting her for 490 RP is a much better idea. Not only do legacy skins seldom go on sale but Kitty Cat isn’t very convincing at its usual price. If you had any interest in getting Kitty Cat then this was probably one of the best ways to get the skin.

    • Well, Re-Gifted Amumu is nothing impressive but if you were ever to get it then it’s better to pay as little as possible. At 490 RP you saved 30 RP which may not seem like much but every bit helps. It also depends how much you play Amumu as it can serve as an alternative to his classic style.

  7. hi Zero what do u think about surprise party amumu ??? πŸ˜€

    • The idea of a party ruined by Amumu’s depression and bad luck seems a fitting angle to take. It has a feeling of having been done before but the implementation could pull through and make something interesting.

From what we’ve seen it seems alright but not awesome as one expects from an expensive skin.

  8. Dear Zero,

another amazing review! You have an artist’s eye. I am curious if you have any of your own art somewhere for us to see? And any other written works besides the inspired short stories you post every skin sale? I really appreciate your talent.

Forgive me for asking these forward (and undocumented) questions. I haven’t browsed everything around here yet. Also, is there only one person maintaining this site or are there many posting under the same name? What a huge workload!

Kudos for you, whomever you may be! Please, keep up the good work! And spread word around, on boards, everywhere! I only found your blog by mistake! This can not be. Everyone that likes League and reading about it should see these! πŸ˜€

Looking forward to your dissection of the new Almost Prom King, Emumu, Re-Gifted and Vancouver Amumu chinese splash arts! πŸ˜€

    • Glad that you like the review, we try to give as much of an educated opinion as we can. We don’t have currently any art to share but who knows? Maybe one day we’ll get our hands on one of those fancy tablets or large scanner and we can get the art side in full display.

The site has been worked on for a few years now which make us feel old. That’s one of the reasons it seems so large, it has been growing for quite some time. We are discreet about any information regarding who’s behind the site for security reasons. Nowadays, the Internet is a jungle and you just can’t be too careful.

We used to promote the site a bit but we now prefer to rely on offering good content and let people find it out. There’s an RSS feed, a Youtube channel with little to offer and a Twitter account that is receiving a little more attention lately. We hope they help spread the word but our focus is on improving the content and making reviews the most useful they can be.

We’ll certainly have the new splash arts assessed and the review updated. It can take some time as there’re a lot of splashes to update but we’ll get to it as soon as we are able to.

      • I completely understand the need for discretion. Just don’t stop posting and share some of your art if/when available πŸ˜€ Please take your time about the splashes, as with everyting incoming there is alot to work on.

        • We’ll keep working hard to make the site as useful as possible. Now, if only the day had a few extra hours… Chances are it still won’t be enough hours.

  9. Hey Zero, what’s your opinion on suprise party amumu? Its going on sale in a few weeks and im considering buying him. His price would be reduced to 675 RP and seems like a good buy.

    • Surprise Party Amumu is a skin that we find with potential to be much more. It presents the sad-tinted party goer picture but never develops the theme sufficiently to make it as attractive as it can be. There’re references and features that intend to deliver the theme but are never as convincing and relevant as they are in Sad Robot Amumu. We do find the latter skin much better despite the price increase it had a long time ago; from 975 RP to 1350 RP.

If you specifically like the idea behind Surprise Party Amumu then the skin will be acceptable enough. It won’t astound but the concept is realised in the changes. However, if you want a great skin for the Sad Mummy there’s one that is effective at transforming Amumu: that’s Sad Robot. It’s consistent, cohesive and attractive so that the concept is well presented by the execution. That doesn’t happen with Surprise Party. As you mention the sale, if possible, get any of these skins on sale as the price is quite high.

  10. Hi hi, Zero. So, you probably know by now but Sewn Chaos Amumu, along with Sewn Chaos Blitzcrank, were both cancelled, because, in their words: “neither Sewn Chaos Blitzcrank nor Sewn Chaos Amumu hit the quality expected of our recent skins, so we’re making the call to remove them.”
What are your thoughts on this, and the skins in general? I know you favor the original Sewn Chaos skin for Orianna, so I’m quite interested in your thoughts on the matter.

I personally didn’t see anything wrong with either skin, though I am not playing League of Legends like I used to so in general skins only sometimes give me a “whoa” impression, like the recently revealed Blood Moon Jhin, but that’s about it. Nowadays I feel most new skins are just old themes for different champions, but for Jhin it’s an exception because I love him so much and this skin, unlike High Noon, doesn’t focus entirely on his gunslinger side which I am not too interested in.
These Sewn Chaos skins seems refreshing because, before them, the theme belonged to a singular skin. It’s not as good as an all new theme, but better than once again seeing a theme that we’ve seen time and time again.

Speaking of which, the new Blood Moon skins seem to have stepped the pricing up from the previous standard of 975 for the line. Expected, really, seeing how nowadays the 975 line is a lot less common than in the past. Thankfully, these seems to come not only with higher prices but also with a Blood Moon Rift, which was a pleasant surprise. What are your thoughts on these skins? As I already said I’m in love with Blood Moon Jhin, even though his blood/paint explosions seem unfinished, specifically the final shot of his ultimate’s explosion. I think the shots are meant to be red paint that looks an awful lot like blood, which makes more sense than actual blood after seeing his artistic recall.

    • Truth be told we are surprised. For skins at 750 RP, which is to be a re-model with a bit extra, they offered enough. Without a doubt they were great skin but they weren’t bad either. Perhaps they didn’t embrace the feel of the Sewn Chaos theme effectively. However, if we are talking about skins with limited resources then they can only do so much to stand out.

Now, with the unofficial move to a standard of 1350 RP for skin we do find a problem. Skins are priced 1350 RP as a base even when they usually only offer the same as a 975 RP skin. Sometimes they are particularly lacking, like Warring Kingdoms Azir, not because of lack of changes but because they are inneffective.

There are exceptions but that’s all they are. If the idea were to raise the price but also the quality bar then we can agree: pay more but get more. However, it feels like only the first part is taken into account. Essentially, it feels like a price rise on skins.

It’s also worrying that skins at 1350 RP have always stood somewhere between 975 RP and legendaries but always closer to 975 RP. Which means that sometimes the only difference is a processed voice-over or some new animations. Hardly has a skin been close to a legendary; Steel Legion Garen may be an exception.

Only Program Lissandra has managed to transform a champion in such a way that it truly deserves the 1350 RP price. That’s a skin that goes beyond 975 RP, even if the breadth of changes is the same, without reaching legendary. It’s a good example, along Steel Legion Garen, of what a skin at that price should offer. For the most part, 1350 RP are superficial and even whimsical without real depth.

Back to the initial argument. If we say that Sewn Chaos skins are shallow then perhaps they need more resources. Within the confines of 520 or 750 RP they do what they can. They can do better in that range that they did. However, there are many other skins that have displayed much serious problems yet have been released without being touched.

  11. Hello Zero , What’s your take on the sewn chaos Amumu skin being cancelled ? i thought the Amumu fit quite well, but the commmunity gave both sewn skins negative feedback and therefore being cancelled for release. I thought it was pretty odd for them to cancel it since this is the first time they cancelled a finished skin

    • We didn’t see either Sewn Chaos Amumu or Blitzcrank as particularly badly done. Given their price they offered enough. Surely they weren’t special or fantastic but they were alright. Perhaps they could’ve been tweaked further but as things that reach the PBE are practically finished there was problably no wiggle room.

Cancelling skins like this when other skins with more salient deficiencies have been released seems odd. With some extra work the skins could better reflect the Sewn Chaos style even if that meant a price increase; though in that case the standard would rise. At any rate, we don’t see them as a lost cause but more as a missed opportunity; like many other cases.

Lately, it seems like skins are only exceptionally original or inspired. For the most part there’s a retread of known themes to avoid risks. While that’s understandable if the execution brings out the best that a theme has to offer we find that’s seldom the case. Mostly, skins are superficial without reaching a distinct identity and also expensive. What once was acceptable at 975 RP seems to be charged 1350 RP.
