Introduction: A Little Man
His laughter was high pitched but tinted by a sombre timbre. He was a small man, dressed in a suit, top hat, with a monocle on his right eye and sporting curled whiskers that reached beyond his cheeks. It could be said that he looked comical, almost, if not for the permanent shadow over his face and his glowing eyes. “He looks like a creepy Poirot.” mentioned a member of court. That was the last time anyone saw him. Nothing was said of the incident but, then, no one dared ask the little man about it.
The summons came with many reservations on the part of all involved. The little man arrived at court and the King was direct: “I want answers.” The little man simply looked directly at the King. The King leaned forward: “Find out who is the butcher and stop him.” The little man laughed, with his distinct style, and left. “Is it wise to choose him?” “Fire with fire.” answered the King staring back at his Queen. The King wasn’t known for subtleties so his choice was actually expected by the Queen. She had won that bet.
The butcher wasn’t easy to find even if one could say that it would be as simple as following the trail of blood from his scenes of debauchery. Yet, he did find him. The butcher looked up to the little man with bloodshot eyes and an equally disgusting expression on his face. Of what he was doing it’s better to say nothing; at most, it was horrible. That was the last time anyone heard of the butcher. He was never to be seen again, he simply vanished but it was by a very specific will. Some say that the little man still works as the King’s expert in removal of special problems. Maybe we should not to delve in such things, lest we attract unwanted attention.
