Introduction: Show of Colours
The lights turned on and the stadium started to get filled with people. The concert would begin in a few hours and there were no tickets left. The robot looked at the queues. Had his metallic face been capable of expression, sadness would’ve been plain to see. He thought about his favourite tune and played it in his mind, literally, he owned the whole discography and had it stored and backed up in his storage system. It provided some small solace but not much, it just wasn’t the same. He wanted to see the show, to feel the vibrations, to share in the emotion. Perhaps he had been built but he could feel the music too.
Looking around he noticed a shady figure moving between queues. Sometimes, this figure would stop and then continue. A closer look, thanks to reducing the distance as well as his telescopic sight, allowed noticing the exchange of money for, just what he needed: tickets! He advanced decidedly but then stopped halfway, how was he going to pay? He had no money, robots weren’t paid, not like that. Then, what could he do? Perhaps, he could ask for a few coins? It would take too long, the tickets were expensive and even more so if they were being resold; at least that’s what the information online said.
He stood there, looking around, when a woman, a strange woman, approached him. She didn’t really look like a pirate, it’s not as if she was wearing an eye-patch and a tricorn hat but, somehow, that was the impression he got. “Looking for something in particular, mate?” He had nothing to lose: “Ticket, best you have, how much?” “I doubt very much you have the money but we may be able to find another sort of arrangement that suits us both, maybe?” Had he any eyebrows he would’ve certainly raised them quite high.
“What arrangement?” “I can give you a ticket, a very good ticket, it’s not first row but between the first seven.” “Row seven?” “You’re quick, good, that’ll be useful. Here’s the deal: I want you to record the concert and upload it online.” “Whole concert? Why?” “The whole full of it. You can’t blink or look around, assuming you have to stop focusing on the stage for that. Well, I’m a fan too and I want to keep a recording of this concert. It’s my first concert you know. I didn’t have money to pay for a good camera and reselling some tickets I got a bit but it’s not enough for a really good camera and if I’m recording I won’t be able to enjoy it.”
The robot said nothing and stayed motionless as if it just had a malfunction. “So, can you do it?” “Yes, I can record the concert and upload, I can even stream it and do so as I enjoy the concert as well as edit the highlights in the meantime.” “That’s, just a little wee bit too much, mate.” “I just want a memento. Besides, this is one of the few shows left so if someone can’t go, and tickets are difficult to come by as you know, they’ll be able to watch it online. Say, you can send me a copy and then I upload it after the tour is over or you can do it, or both. It doesn’t matter.” The robot paid attention even if that only meant that he stayed motionless.
“Do we have a deal?” “I will respect every condition you have set forth…” “Great, come, hurry, there’s not much time left.” The woman ran to the entrance and the robot tried to keep up. For a lithe woman, that is a human, she was much faster than he could’ve anticipated. He got to the entrance as the woman was finishing a sentence: “… yes, that robot over there is my friend. Here’s his ticket. Any problem?” “No, Miss, here you are. Enjoy the show.” “Come, let’s go, row seven, remember!” They made their way through the crowd and reached the seventh row. “Hey, you’ve made it!” “Yep, this is great. By the way, this is my friend.”
The woman introduced him to another one, changed by genetics but still, enthusiastic about the concert. “Pleased to meet you.” “Me, too. Hello.” They reached their places and the lights dimmed, just in time. The fireworks started, the colourful beams of light created a rainbow, then the spectrum of colour centred on a single spot: the spot where she was. The music started and the show took full swing. It wasn’t going to be difficult to concentrate on the stage, how could anyone look elsewhere? In the softness of darkness tinted by kaleidoscopic light, it didn’t matter what or how you were made of, only one thing mattered: the music. And it was really great; you know, mate.
