Snowdown Showdown 2010

Santa is here and it seems he’s had more than a pint too much. Fortunately, the helpers are ready to shoot the right spirit; even if it means literally. They can also smash it into people and if anyone feels threatened remember that there are lots of gifts and nuts which you won’t want to return. Never mind all that, it’s time to stop worrying and enjoy a wonderful interpretation of Deck the Halls surrounded by family and friends. Let the Snowdown Showdown start.

Candy Cane Miss Fortune
Candy Cane Miss Fortune Splash Art Candy Cane Miss Fortune Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Miss Fortune wearing a Christmas-inspired clothing and wielding candy canes.
Model: Moderate model changes for Miss Fortune and new model for her guns.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Candy Cane Miss Fortune’s splash as is as unimpressive as it could be. The background is simply a house surrounded by snow with its door open. Fortunately, Miss Fortune is going in as she’s hardly dressed to fare weather conditions fitting for snow. The house presumably shows a Christmas tree, presents and associated decorations but it’s so unclear that more than anything it’s a guess. Miss Fortunes’s depiction isn’t convincing either: her visage lacks her usual playful mood and seems serious and annoyed. The dress is passable, like the boots and only the bottom of the left candy cane seems to be well drawn. Truth be told, it’s a splash art that doesn’t seem to try to fit Miss Fortune nor portray her in an attractive way; a complete letdown.

Conclusion: Candy Cane Miss Fortune is a simple and uninspired Christmas skin. The dress, hat and boots are as plain as they could be while the candy cane guns are just alright. In fact the skin seems to have been made with little effort. In spite of this, the overall aesthetic is attractive as few would look as good as Miss Fortune wearing a Christmas hat. In conclusion, it’s a skin with some value besides being a collector’s item for dedicated Miss Fortune fans but in the end not much would be missed.

Ragdoll Poppy
Ragdoll Poppy Splash Art Ragdoll Poppy Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Poppy as a cloth doll.
Model: Major model changes for Poppy plus new model for the Hammer of Orlon and her buckler.
Particles: New hammer for Keeper’s Verdict plus new feathers for Iron Ambassador and Keeper’s Verdict.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New sounds for Iron Ambassador.
Splash Art: Whose bedroom could this be? There’re all kinds of toys and decorations with champion references so why is there a little yordle girl causing havoc? The expressions of the few present indicate that Annie and Poppy may be at a standoff, one that no one wants due to the implied consequences. The context given is excellent but the background, despite its richness, is too diffuse and at times sketchy. In a small bedroom the depth of field effect wouldn’t be so pronounced.
Blurriness aside, there’s an abundance of detail in the setting that brings the piece to life. Poppy is half posing, half making a statement. The portrayal is rather good and follows the dim style of the background which, given the yarn concept at hand, makes sense. There’s still good shading and detail but on the outline things can get unnecessarily blurry.
In spite of the diffuse parts the result is fantastic. Thanks to the dedication the idea of a child’s bedroom with a heavy liking for League of Legends is accomplished; perhaps even borrowing the setup from Toy Story. Nevertheless, this makes for an extremely satisfying splash art that makes up for its shortcomings with a concerted referential effort. Therefore, even though it has its flaws it still can be among League of Legends’ best splash arts.

Conclusion: Ragdoll Poppy is more effective due to its charm and suitability to her cartoony style than a wonderful execution. While Poppy looks quite good her clothes and appearance suggest a traditional ragdoll more than represent it. The yarn hair is the most distinct feature as her skin looks rather normal, for a yordle girl at least.
Nonetheless, her weapons add a necessary dose of identity that helps deliver the theme. Her legendary hammer as a wooden mallet is a classic cartoon device and fits the concept without issue. The cushion buckler offers an additional dose of appeal with its flying feathers which helps cement the skin’s style. That’s quite necessary as there are only some brief feathers for Keeper’s Verdict to help define the identity that, as a re-model, isn’t as eloquent as it should.
On the whole, the style isn’t particularly striking, or even funny, but is certainly appealing. The wooden mallet and cushion-buckler remain two of the most relevant assets of the skin. The yarn hair and doll clothes can only do so much to present the ragdoll fantasy but the cartoony style benefits greatly from the lighthearted weapons and approach. Still, Ragdoll Poppy doesn’t go far from a re-model despite its price yet, taken for what it can offer, one can be sure to enjoy an interesting and cute appearance for this determined yordle girl.

Silent Night Sona
Silent Night Sona Splash Art Silent Night Sona Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Sona lets the Christmas spirit engulf her: she dresses for the occasion and decorates her Etwahl accordingly.
Model: Major modifications to Sona’s model and small additions to her Etwahl.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New joke for Sona, she plays an excerpt of ‘Deck the Halls’.
Splash Art The splash art is a good representation of Sona’s model. The art is nice showing Sona’s flowing hair as she plays her instrument. The particles emanating from the glowing chords of her Etwahl round up a solid piece of art.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: While the modifications to the skin are not enough to consider it a re-model it also didn’t carry the price of one. Moreover, the addition of a new joke is a nice plus that makes it special; as it should be for a limited skin. All things considered, if you bought it while available you made a good purchase.

Reindeer Kog’Maw
Reindeer Kog'Maw Splash Art Reindeer Kog'Maw Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Kog’Maw trying to look like a reindeer.
Model: Minor model changes and new texture for Kog’Maw.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: New joke for Kog’Maw: an extract of Deck the Hall.
Splash Art: A void reindeer can come with its set of problems and here some are aptly displayed. The background is a good frame that disappoints a little because of the way colours blend into each other. The lack of contrast makes details difficult to distinguish. Still, the caustic effect of Kog’Maw’s presence is a good touch. Kog’Maw is well represented but the fur is too simple and the void creature features don’t homogenize well with reindeer traits. In conclusion, this splash art shows the relevance of a good execution. In spite of the good concept the final product doesn’t deliver on its promise.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Reindeer Kog’Maw is certainly a picturesque take on the mouth of the abyss. In spite of the festive spirit, the concept doesn’t actually suit Kog’Maw that well. The idea heavily relies on humour but the execution feels more forced than funny. The colour palette is restricted to drab colours and the model changes aren’t particularly effective at changing Kog’Maw’s aspect. The new Deck the Hall’s extract is a nice little addition, though it replaces Classic’s joke and isn’t enough to make up for the plain execution. As a limited skin it’s now worth more as a collector’s item than as a quality skin.

Nutcracko
Nutcracko Splash Art Nutcracko Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Shaco as a nutcracker soldier.
Model: Major model changes for Shaco and new model for his daggers. New textures for Jack in the Box and Hallucinate.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: This splash is so centred on showing how Shaco poses as a nutcracker soldier that it simply doesn’t show anything else; sans a floor to stand on. Besides, the soldiers quickly fade in the distance which, considering the absence of any substantial background, make the piece look empty. Shaco’s portrayal is passable, he does seem to blend with the rest of the soldiers but the depiction isn’t special or attractive in any way. Overall, it’s a simplistic and disappointing splash art that barely serves its purpose.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Nutcracko is a clear reference to Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and an adequate Christmas skin. Unfortunately, while Shaco may be nuts there’s little else linking him to a nutcracker. Therefore, the concept feels more forced that clever. Furthermore, the soldier uniform conforms to Classic Shaco’s style so it looks adapted instead of recreated. In fact, while the adaptation is technically passable the result feels unexciting. Shaco fans will find that the skin hardly delivers on what makes Shaco appealing and so it becomes little more than a collector’s item.

Re-Gifted Amumu
Re-Gifted Amumu Splash Art Re-Gifted Amumu Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 520 RP
Concept: Amumu with a present for head.
Model: Moderate model changes to Amumu.
Particles: No new particles.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: Re-Gifted Amumu’s splash art is adequate, well thought but unexciting. The background provides a good setting and places Amumu as a returned gift. Amumu looks alright with his usual sad mood and depressed pose. Still, the piece as a whole doesn’t manage to be more than the sum of its parts. It may be due to the mute colours or simple drawing. Whatever it may be, this isn’t a bad splash art but it doesn’t rise above average.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: Re-Gifted Amumu is a very whimsical concept that forces the notion of the unloved and avoided mummy. It’s also extremely simple in its execution: new gift head and ready to go. The result works better than it should due to the attention given to the gift head. Considering it’s a prominent part of Amumu’s physique it’s well designed and finished with an attractive ribbon. Still, the concept is a bit weak and the execution doesn’t really make up for it. All in all, not a bad skin but also not worth worrying about missing it.

Santa Gragas
Santa Gragas Splash Art Santa Gragas Model
Category: Legacy
Price: 975 RP
Concept: Gragas dressed as Santa Claus.
Model: Moderate model changes for Gragas and new model for his cask.
Particles: New particles for Barrel Roll, Drunken Rage and Explosive Cask.
Animations: No new animations.
Sounds: No new sounds.
Splash Art: At first glance the piece may seem comical but that passes soon. Gragas as a, let’s say, enticing-wannabe, Santa isn’t as funny or interesting as a splash art needs. Besides, the background is mostly a few brush strokes that barely hint at a Christmas Tree and a sofa. Gragas depiction is passable as the uneven colours and lines show great detail for his face and barely display his lower body. Overall, a piece that shows lack of polish in both concept and execution.
Rating: Star clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZeroStar clip art used in skin reviews at StrategyZero
Conclusion: In an effort to adapt Gragas into Santa Claus some compromises had to be made; which were concealed with a veil of humour. For instance, the disproportionally small suit allows for the belly and arms to be exposed, clearly showing that Gragas doesn’t fit the role well. The humour may try to excuse Gragas drinking from his presents’ bag and throwing explosive barrel decorations. However, it feels as it simply made the implementation easier. Still, the result isn’t terrible but it certainly lacks polish. If you don’t mind a rough looking Santa then it’s a skin that you may like but you’ll have to overlook its hard edges.

Conclusion

This is a rather varied set of skins but the better ones stand out thanks to additional elements and charming implementations. The recommended skins are: Ragdoll Poppy and Silent Night Sona. The former is a particularly appealing interpretation of a yordle and effective beyond its modesty. The latter embraces the season in the most natural way for Sona: with a carol.

Candy Cane Miss Fortune and Santa Gragas can also be interesting options with a straightforward yet fitting style. They are little more than changes of clothes but if you excuse how direct they are they have their charm.

Finally, Reindeer Kog’Maw, Nutcracko and Re-Gifted Amumu are skins that force a concept into the champion without adapting it. They’re not always as unsuitable as they can be but in general they are skins that lack refinement.
