“Deal.” “Are you sure you want to play?” “Let’s go.” The Spectre distributed the cards and the Warlord drew his hand. “So, your turn.” The Warlord played his cards and passed. The Spectre countered him with eons of experience. “Humans are simple, predictable and boring. As a master of war I certainly expected better.” “Mocking me? Is that the best you can do?” “Oh, I can do much better but you wouldn’t like that.” The Warlord wasn’t impressed by the threat but he let his mind imagine wielding such power for a second.
Turns went by, cards were played and the Spectre wasn’t disappointed. “Now we are talking. I knew you would be a good match.” He played his best card and the Warlord gasped. He played his second best and passed. “I would’ve thought your experience wouldn’t let you be led so easily, Spectre.” He played three cards, eliminated the Spectres plan and was only one turn from winning.” The Spectre looked with mild astonishment. “This is the first time someone comes so close to winning. I congratulate you.”
The Spectre’s final card allowed him to reinstate his previous combination and win in that same turn. The Warlord was perplexed, surprised and the claws of fear started to scratch his mind. “It was a wonderful game. I really have never met such a skilled opponent. It’d be wonderful to play again with you.” The Warlord looked at the Spectre’s empty sockets with despair. “Don’t worry, I know the ante but I would really like to play again. How about we forget about that and we play another game without the worry of looming death?” The Warlord sighed and accepted. Perhaps he wasn’t going to acquire supernatural powers now but this time it could actually be fun.
