Introduction: Contracts and Outcomes
Every contract is unique. You just never know how it’s going to go. Sometimes, the risks are high but the proposal so tempting that you just can’t say no. There’s usually a price to pay. Something can go wrong and at the end the good pay mostly goes to cover medical expenses. At least, you learn from the experience; you better or next time you may not be so lucky. There may be an extra reward if you do get really lucky. Far from me to say no to a cash bonus but if it’s something with some added, punchy value all the better.
It reminds me of the time that we had to chase a lunatic with a giant hammer; turns out the hammer did pack a lot of punch. Of course, I learned not to get too near. I don’t need to anyway: I just shot the fool from a distance. They dragged him away in an ambulance as I got my pay and I could also keep the hammer. That thing has come in useful more than once when you want to get through a barrier without leaving your signature. It also makes for a rather intimidating weapon. People still respect a huge, heavy hammer more than an auto-blaster.
Well, here we are. I don’t like doing business with these people but I like the new girl working with them. She may appear a bit unpredictable but we share the same sense of humour: the bigger the explosion, the better. She’s had some interesting jobs before and the mayhem she usually causes, because she likes to stay for the ride, is lots of fun. I just hope they don’t task me with doing any of their dirty work. I once had to and I made it clear when I got back that I’m no common killer. Probably they still remember it well enough or I’ll carve it across their faces in big letters, again.
