Introduction: Burnt Land

“We guard the sands, we look over what little is left of the past; for the future.” With those words the novice was accepted as an acolyte. His first steps would be uncertain as the master knew all too well from when he was accepted, many decades ago. He still felt uncertain. Sometimes there was an overwhelming feeling of quietness that gave the ruined Earth a feeling that it was anticipating a disaster. It didn’t matter now: he had to guide the acolyte to his chambers and through his first lessons. Such worries could wait, they always had.

That night fatigue overwhelmed the master’s worries but not the acolyte’s. It was a restless time where, for all the familiarity that this little piece of civilization provided, everything felt alien. He looked out, through a window which he couldn’t decide if it was too small to appreciate the barren landscape or too big for the dangers that lurked among the dunes. The night was quiet and cold, he had to borrow a sweater from his unpacked case. Not even a breeze could be felt on the surface yet it seemed that the earth was timidly shaking.

The explosion woke up the master even through his much needed slumber. He looked out and crossed eyes with the acolyte through the irregular, thick wall that protected the bedrooms from the outside. The wind blew and howled savagely, carrying with it charred remains that broke against the temple. The flames licked the surface of the sand and turned it into glass. In the distance, as more witnesses joined with incredulity, they saw the unmistakeable shape of the nuclear mushroom. It was far enough that the temple resisted thanks to its rudimentary architecture yet close enough to feel the atomic roar.

The sand storm lasted for days and in the following weeks the sky was covered in ash. Hardly a thread of sunlight escaped through the dark mantle spread above the land. The lack of Sun started to take its toll on the garden; which spelt doom to its plants: the temple’s source of fresh vegetables. Someone had to go out, into the well called wasteland, and try to find out if the nearest temple was still up. At any rate, they needed to get back anything they could borrow or salvage from it.

With enough luck, they would still have the UV-light lamps they lent them. With more luck, they could even join forces to survive. Many possibilities burdened the master’s mind as he left the temple with his acolyte. The shy excitement of the acolyte about the enterprise was soon snuffed out by the scorched look of the sands. The master said nothing and simply walked forward with the aid of his cane. He had seen enough, never this bad granted, but many things which had given him the wisdom to concentrate on what he could do and ignore what was beyond his power. The young lad would learn too, eventually, or perhaps sooner than anticipated; through sheer need.
