Introduction: Hunter Nature
The jungle was full of pools of crystalline water. It had just rained, poured actually, so every step was accompanied by an echoing splash. The beast smelled, left and right, it wasn’t used to this lush greenness and exuberant growth but the abundance of life, prey, was something it could easily get accustomed to. The heat was another matter. Its thick fur felt heavy and oppressive under the wet, tropical climate. It certainly made it mad and it wasn’t as if it needed an excuse to do so. Every prey sensed through thick vegetation but out of reach was a missed opportunity to satiate hunger and that also made it mad.
In spite of the reputation of the forest she had ventured forward for a hunt she simply couldn’t miss. She wasn’t the only one, of course, much bravado and little conscience was usually seen at the hunters’ guild. She had a plan, though, and wasn’t to be dissuaded by some wide guys with more armour than brains. The recent rain made it difficult to walk without sound which meant that she had to move very slowly and carefully. She risked any of the other hunters getting to the prize first but the alternative was being devoured by it. She wasn’t going to repeat the mistakes made with the runes, not her.
It had been a good while in the jungle when the sound of teeth ripping meat was heard. She moved in slow motion, approaching as if she was static but minutes showed the steady approach. Between leafs she saw the beast chewing and the thick armour plates spread around. Someone did get to it first but without due care. She prepared her weapon, aimed and stopped. First, she needed to lay some traps; just in case the feral beast could cope with being impaled from side to side. Once the traps were laid the javelin flew through the air and stopped halfway through the creature.
It roared, how it roared the beast, animals fled from the horrendous belch of pain. She stood prone on the grass, watching, waiting, ready for an encore. It stumbled left and a trap caught one leg, it tried to stagger forward and another got the other leg. It was starting to pant and so she appeared before those glowing eyes and ended the beast’s suffering with a javelin through the head. The worst part now was carrying all that bulk back to the vehicle. She should’ve brought a line to drag it through the forest. Well, she used the old trick of cutting some branches and making a makeshift trolley onto which she rolled the beast. It was a lot of work all this hunting stuff but she enjoyed it. It could be said it was in her nature.
