Introduction: Incidental Path
“Real heroism only makes you die young.” The words of one of her old flying teachers passed through her mind as the plane plummeted down in a helpless line. Call it luck or fate. She probably wouldn’t say that fortune was involved, at least not any of the good kind, but she survived the fall with only a few scratches. The valley to which she emerged from the wreck of her plane was lit by a grey light and surrounded by irregular black mountains. She did have an idea of where she where but only a general presumption of her location. What worried her was the feel of unease on her chest.
She walked a few steps in each cardinal direction to get a bearing of the surroundings and promptly decided to sketch a rough map of the area with what was left of sunlight. Night fell much like her plane between the mountains. Their long shadows made them look as if they leaned forwards towards the plane to take a closer look at what had fell before their feet. The giants didn’t dare action beyond looking and she decided that it was better to do the same. Tomorrow, with good light she could make an inventory of anything useful in the plane and try to make a plan.
As she looked for a place to lie she noticed the smell of fuel seeping from the wings. Her torch revealed a trickling line that moved from the right wing to the left; which broken kept the plane balanced like an elbow. She had to skip the rest and get to salvage what could be of use before a spark came uninvited. Her rucksack was light despite her best efforts. Only a small canteen with water, a few chocolate bars for her sweet tooth and whatever tools she found: compass, screwdriver, knife, hammer and an adjustable spanner. She remembered about the axe when she had taken a few steps out of the plane and hesitated about returning for it.
She did. She knew where it ought to be and it had predictably followed a straight line from its place through the floor. She ran with her precious cargo from the plane. With safe distance between plane and herself she looked at the dark, monotonous sky and took cover under a fissure on a side of some rocks that had, assumedly, rolled down from the eastward mountain. She would’ve preferred to welcome the sun in her new abode but she realised she had to make do with what she could find. At least, she had some sort of roof over her.
The morning came with a timid light and a damp air. She woke up to find dew all over her clothes which she tried to wipe with her hands. It was of little use so instead she took a sip of water, grabbed the rucksack and walked towards some vegetation to the south. She had no idea if any of their fruit was edible so she munched a bar of chocolate and followed a forgotten path on the grass. It led to a few rocks on the west mountains where the weak light of the Sun warmed her up a bit. She followed into a dark cave that her torch revealed to swallow light with as much hunger as she felt. “Could it lead to the other side?”
She didn’t have extra batteries so as long as she could make way with the shy sunlight she kept the torch off. It took fewer steps than she would’ve liked to find total darkness around her. The torch led the way towards a dim glow that meekly combated the heavy gloom around. She turned the torch off and, with apprehension, touched the fungi that emitted a soft, blue-like light: it felt like moss. She followed the fungi growth, deeper into the mountain until it came to her that she felt almost pulled to advance forward. It wasn’t just curiosity, a few steps backwards revealed a slight inclination downwards and forward. Each step took her as far into the mountain as it did into the centre of the Earth. “I can’t turn back now.”
