Introduction: Thrice’s the Charm
“The suspect is on the run. It was last seen exiting through one of the secondary avenues. Witness reports indicate that the culprit was dressed in an animal costume.” The Royal Guard spreads over the city covering every street, no nook and cranny unseen. “That’s what they ought to be doing but they are too lazy to excel.” It was not actually part of her duty, she was already assigned a route to check, where nothing was to be found being around the abandoned cathedral, and could return home afterwards. So, she was going to expand her area of search. “Others try, I succeed.”
She went headfirst to the street signalled by the first reports. Following a trace of footsteps, the kind so obvious the other guards would look away from to avoid work, she followed into a secondary avenue. She exited into a colourful street where detonations took her by surprise; almost. She unsheathed and dashed behind lamppost cover towards the source: a sort of animal. Her slash stroke swiftly and the paper was cut in half to reveal a simple machine to shoot fireworks. It was just another celebration of the Lunar New Year. “Mislead, this time.”
She retraced her steps back to the secondary avenue and noticed that a trace of fur lead into a building. She confidently went in, her uniform eloquent enough against the stares of the residents, until she exited on the other side of the block. She followed to the shipyard where cargo was being loaded into a ship. She went close towards a crate that exhibited on the outside the signs of fur like the one she was following. With a swift slash of her sword the top fell to the floor and she found inside only rabbits. The foreman started to complain but the coldness in her face shut him up. “Thrice’s the charm.”
She returned to the trace. With the Sun now lower on the horizon she noticed that two traces of fur were to be followed: one rabbit white and the other dark. She took the path not taken which lead her towards the less hospitable neighbourhood near the docks. With fiery intent the looks of the tough crooks that passed her got melted into overt fear. She simply kicked the wooden door and entered into the house until the trace of fur ended into a mass of it. The racoon opened his eyes as if they were lamps. “Surrender! Or I’ll make you.”
The thief drew his revolver but she had her sword in hand already. The shot seemed to slowly spread smoke on the air, the bullet lazily flying through the air, she looked at the lead projectile as if it were a dream. It wasn’t and she skilfully parried the bullet with the side of the rapier deflecting it back towards the racoon. It hit him right over the head, leaving a nice round hole on his cap. He tried to shoot again when he saw his empty hand and realised that the blade held the weapon by the guard. He tried to run but the blade cut his belt and his trousers made him slip. He tried to crawl but the rapier was too close to his throat. “You are coming with me and you better not make me waste more time.”
