Introduction: Freezing Waters
One dressed in hearts, the other in furs, both ladies walk alongside the coast and inhale the fresh sea air. They look at the white sands and converse about the latest news and trending topics among the population. The whimsical curves of nature’s brush gave a steady rhythm of turns to the, as one of the ladies would pinpoint: “promenading of the esplanade.” “Shall we make our way back?” “Just a few more paces, I know a great spot with a unique view of the whirling sea waters.” They reached the place in a handful of steps but instead of finding the waves curling against the sand they found a large block of ice floating.
They looked at the small iceberg and each other in intermittent gasps and constant bewilderment. “What’s that doing here?” “More importantly, my dear, how is it not thawing with the temperature as it is?” “You’re right, besides, it’s right under the sunlight.” They inspected the ball of ice from all possible angles; taking good care not to get sand on their gleaming footwear. A surfer passed with board firmly held under his arm and eyes set on the water. Evidently oblivious to anything beyond himself and the water the ladies called his attention and pointed to the small iceberg on the water. “Now, that’s a curious thing.” escaped his lips.
The surfer approached the water before the small iceberg and, hoping on his board, swam towards it. The ladies stared in anticipation as each arm displaced water behind and slowly but steadily propelled board and man forward. In scant instants the surfer stopped his board next to the mass of ice. With apprehension surpassed by curiosity he laid his hand on the iceberg’s surface and confirmed the obvious with a shout:” It’s cold!” The ladies suppressed a condescending answer but the surfer meant to include all of the surrounding water. With wild gesticulations and ample shouting they indicated the man to circle the iceberg and then see underwater.
Eager as they were to find out more about the unusual apparition they forgot that what they were watching might also be watching them. Going around the iceberg and then peeking with head underwater the man was pulled from his board into the depths. The women stared in disbelief and looked around for any assistance but there was none to be found. Almost ready to jump themselves into the water the man emerged and shouted: “It’s Okay, I slipped!” “Is there anything down there?” “Did you see anything?” “Nothing, it’s just more ice but it reaches down to the bottom.” The surfer walked to the street and announced: “We’ll have to tell the prefecture people.” Then one of the ladies added: “Don’t you notice anything weird? Isn’t there more of it?” They analysed the ice mass and finally the other lady chimed in: “You’re right, dear, it’s getting bigger.” “We better go all of us together, this is very strange indeed.”
