Introduction: Rage Against Ignorance
Axe versus hammer, rage against intellect, barbarism facing civilization: a battle to settle all disputes, once and for all. The metal suit resisted the dull edge of the heavy axe. His hammer stroke back but it seemed like the orc was made of iron. He had to win this battle, the city had to state its superiority over the ignorant tribes that surrounded them. If he fell then the city would go down with him. This could stop the war and finally allow for a proper education for many. It all came down to who could strike the most and the hardest against their adversary. So much for culture.
The orc felt his rage call for possession of his body, he resisted. He wasn’t going to be stopped, reduced, slaved by the rules dictated by fools. The city only respected money or might. Elders were discarded, wisdom was ignored, they only respected success. There was more to life than getting away with one’s own way. He knew it very well when he accepted to fight as the tribe’s representative. He didn’t choose to be a warrior but the life of a shaman wasn’t to be for him. The land still spoke to him, suffering what others called progress. He chose to fight for them, for all the lives he couldn’t save. He would do so now.
The axe cut the air brutally and the hammer swung with a hiss. The weapons stroke each other and broke to pieces. Of course, the metal man had a plan B. The hammer disassembled and transformed into a sort of rifle. The orc rolled over the ground, amazed at such an unexpected turn. He would’ve gladly called the fight a draw and try to pursue negotiations but you couldn’t reason with these beasts. Without any alternatives, he let rage take hold of his body. He leapt forward, shots piercing his rapidly regenerating flesh, and fell with an elbow on the rifle. It broke in two but so did he.
The metal man looked down at the orc, bleeding yet alive. Nobody could’ve resisted that many shots and still he clung to life. His body desperately struggled to close the deep wounds that the arcs of energy coursing over his skin reopened. It all came down to one final blow. The orc stared at him with drooling, wide-open mouth. Everyone saw the pain was maddening. The man took off his helmet and kneeled over the orc. He disconnected a couple of wires from his suit and linked the orc’s skin to the suit’s power-engine. The machine absorbed all the residual energy and the orc finally started to regenerate with a sigh of relief. With his head resting on the concrete floor the orc looked at the man and smiled. The man smiled too and helped him to his feet. It was time to talk.
