Introduction: Head Hunt
“And now, the finale!” The wrestler jumps on the ropes and falls on top of his adversary who gasps for air. The referee finished the fight: the man with the tiger mask is triumphant. People cheer and celebrate or leave disillusioned. Eventually, even the merriest leave the arena. One such attendant goes out of the streets into the forests around the city. She looks back at the bright lights before spreading a fan of furry tails and entering the woods.
She walks silently and eyes each appearing tree with attention. After some steps she reaches a path and, with quick steps, follows into the heart of the forest. There’s an unnatural silence despite the dusk and her hurried steps become a trot and then a manic run. She didn’t look back so she couldn’t have seen it coming. She felt something was amiss, though, and threw herself on the ground. Turning on her back she looked behind and sent her glowing orb of pure magic to illuminate and clear the way.
She saw nothing, until she stood up and resumed running. She had to look back when she heard the two pairs of feet on the ground. It didn’t sound like a horse, there was no harmony to the rattle. It was a confused collection of impacts against the ground that allowed the creature a surprising fleetness. She surrounded herself with will-o’-the-wisps. With the creature gaining ground they homed on its exoskeleton and set it aflame with mystic fire, but it didn’t stop it.
“I have to fight.” She turned and conjured more flames, she sent her orb ahead and dashed with magical grace around the creature. It lashed at her dissolving ground and life wherever its toxic fluids landed. Tired from the activity she paused to take a breath when she noticed the red dot on the creature’s forehead. The shot ripped through air like a serrated blade and disintegrated the head in flying pieces. The body kept walking and attacking at random so she took refuge behind some trees. The creature stood on a trap which snapped a leg off and stopped it. More shots came afterwards, cutting the remaining legs and arms.
The huntress walked with calm towards the body of moving lumps. She checked that all limbs had been well removed from the body. She wasn’t satisfied with one of the legs so she shot it shorter and kicked with her metallic boots all parts to the sides of the path. She shot a net over the body and connected it to a line. The creature was lifted into the dark maw of the night sky. “We’ll need more than magic and bullets to stop that thing from re-growing but we’ll take care of it; don’t worry.” She left the way she had emerged as the eyes of many a forest dweller arose from their hiding places. It was enough excitement for one evening.
