Introduction: Deals and Flushes
“Deal.” The deep voice of the soldier echoed in a monotonous tone. He received the cards with a face of stone. The constable smirked and grunted with every card. The aristocrat showed an impressive degree of composure: he didn’t seem to even breathe. The cowboy finished with his last card and didn’t look at them; he already knew what he had. He actually knew what every player had received. He had trained hard for such little tricks but they always paid off. In a high stakes game every tiny advantage felt monumental.
“Open your wallets, gentlemen.” “You don’t know what it is.” The aristocrat moved a good amount of chips to the centre of the table. In one swift movement they arranged themselves as if finishing a small dance. Both soldier and constable were much less graceful and the cowboy simply pushed the necessary handful of them. Eyes glanced left and right as each player moved. Details spoke volumes about confidence and fear. The cowboy hadn’t still looked at his cards and the others knew had realised. They observed his composure with silent distrust.
“Two for me.” “I want three.” “I’m perfectly fine, thank you.” “Fine too.” No sentence went unnoticed or saved itself from an agonising scrutiny. The result didn’t talk as much as each player would’ve wanted but it did tell them good information. They glimpsed at each other over cards and under hat rims. Breathing became an exercise in control and all kinds of reactions were suppressed at each realisation. This was the time when an expression like “This is going to be interesting” wouldn’t be advised and yet the cowboy had just uttered it.
The others looked at him while he pushed his entire collection of chips to the centre. The constable couldn’t help but whistle while the soldier was surprised at nothing his raised eyebrow. Only the aristocrat remained undaunted but not motionless. He looked with bloodshot eyes straight at the cowboy’s glowing equivalents. Then he waved his entire chip store to the centre of the table. Both soldier and constable looked at each other in tactical retreat. The cowboy revealed his hand: straight flush. The aristocrat straightened in his chair as if pulled by thin air: straight flush. What seemed improbable revealed a problem, each flush was from the same suit.
The aristocrat unleashed his inhuman beast while the constable put his baton on the ready and the soldier advanced towards the cowboy. A set of five cards started to glow and exploded in a few moments. After a while, the players stood up with difficulty to find that the cowboy had vanished. They went outside to find no trace of him. On the table the remaining cards and chips were untouched. However, the stash of money that made the actual pot was completely empty. In the bottom they found a set of cards in a very specific order: a straight flush.
