Introduction: The Skies Crack
Thunder cracked the skies and lightning the earth. It was desolate, the view, the land, the feeling: there was nothing that reminded of the green, bucolic kingdom he once knew. He was aware he shouldn’t have taken it for granted and he tried, usually. You are never prepared for when the world changes and everything you know ceases to exist. He fought, valiantly some would say, but in the end he was but one against an apocalyptic power that showed that some things surely are beyond human reach.
The King sustained heavy injuries in the battle. At the start he didn’t fight alone, but his army was demolished and he survived only thanks to the efforts of a shaman. He was a shaman betrayed by the power he commanded. Thunder and lightning, which guided and protected him, had become beings of pure destruction and unstoppable devastation. It seemed unreal that forces which were once on their side had turned directly against them. Not fully, though, as it was that same power which the Shaman channelled to save the King.
Now, there was nothing recognisable and only a large exodus into his very own lands. The Shaman followed behind, searching in vain for some little animal or small herb to rescue. “What did we do to deserve this?” said the King without being aware of his words being spoken. “Perhaps it’s not what we did but what we didn’t do. This land was a precious gift we should’ve protected.” “Didn’t we?” “I suppose we could’ve done more.” “Maybe.” Who could give a definite answer? Was what they saw an answer or simply a whim of a will beyond what they could comprehend?
