Introduction: A Gathering to Die for
“I can asure you Milady, you have never seen something so wonderful.” “I can’t believe you. I had seemnmy fair share of exquisite art.” “But the craftsmanship in this piece is something becoming of kings. You must see it, I insist.” “Fine, I will go. I might as well invite the King if your words are true.” The Lord swallowed but immediately re-gained his composure. “I’m certain neither of you will be disappointed.” He decided to up the ante when looking at the Lady’s disingenuous look and mocking smirk. “In fact, why don’t you invite the whole court? They’d be delighted, I’m sure.”
The room was filled with important people. Wherever the eye could see it would find celebrities, members of cabinet, merchants and, of course, the aristocrats. In the centre was the King, impatient as ever, trying to get away from the never-ending and unavoidable appeals that subtly reached his ears. The cart advanced slowly with the Lord in front. “Ladies and Gentlemen, your Majesty, you are about to see a work of art like none other in the entire world. What you will see now will change your lives forever. I have not a doubt.”
The sheet was removed and underneath they saw a statue of vivid colours with a shape that resembled a scorpion but with a style that seemed exotic and unusual. People gathered around and examined the life-like surface, the attention to detail and the vibrant feel of the entire piece. “This statue was found, among others, guarding the entrance to a tomb and temple in the desert. It’s been brought here at great peril to our lives but we can all agree that it’s worth it.” They were all hypnotised by the unique characteristics of the statue. So much so that they barely noticed that it slowly started to move and shed grains of sand as it did. Little by little they recoiled and soon they were face to face with a living creature from which there was no escape.
