Introduction: The Secrets That Lay Here
Dust and sand, a lot of sand. It rains like water on the tomb but there’s no such thing in the desert. “This is quite far away from your happy concerts and fancy servants, explorer, this is a wicked place from where you won’t be back.” “What?” “What what?” “You were talking to me?” “No, I was looking at these walls. Look, this is incredible: it tells the whole story of the ascension and fall of the kingdom.” “Wasn’t it an empire?” “Technically no, you need to be king of kings for that.” “This guy won’t like that.” “Well, he’s past caring now, right?” “I guess.”
They continued exploring the tomb and making the most out of the sunrays that jumped from surface to surface through the skylight-like aperture at the top. The shadows of the staircase the led downwards hanged like scars over the walls. “It’s getting creepy, isn’t it?” “Grow up, it’s just the Sun going down. Bring the lights and we’ll continue, we have much to do.” They tried to go on with the help of the lamps but the tomb devoured light with unending gluttony. “Okay, guess we’ll return to the camp and rest. We’ll continue tomorrow with the first rays of the Sun.” “Sounds great to me. There’s a steak with my name waiting.”
Perhaps it was the heavy meal but that night she was restless. She didn’t stop waking up, sometimes minutes apart, sometimes hearing a voice. “The secrets that lay here will make you immortal in many ways. Come, look, learn and change forever.” She tried to get her companion to wake up but she was down like a log. She insisted: “Don’t you hear it? There’s someone talking.” “Bur bother. Toborrow.” “This can’t wait.” She just stood up, exited the tent with one of the best lamps and entered the night. She immediately turned and grabbed her revolver. She was intrigued but not out of her mind.”
With lamp in one hand and gun in the other she descended slowly until she found the floor at the bottom. The lights struggled against malformed shadows but her hand remained steady. She walked past the tomb in the middle and looked around. Nothing seemed out of place. She was staring at the floor, half puzzled and half annoyed, when she noticed the trail of sand. It came from the tomb and went deeper into the earth. The desire to follow consumed her but her sanity managed to prevail.
What really helped was when she took a few steps forward and noticed the body of her companion, dried and devoid of life clenching a wall. She ran up the stairs without looking back despite the screams of horror of her friend. She was dead, who was shouting? Who had she been talking to the whole day? That body had dust on it, it had been there for some time, how didn’t she notice it? She ran into the tent and fell down, stumbling with a soft body. She sat on the floor and received one of the angriest looks her friend had ever given her. “What? How?” She jumped and hugged her tight. “What’s with you? Let me breathe.”
“We need to go, now and fast.” “Are you insane? No, but if we stay we’ll be or worse. Trust me, I’ve seen down there.” With some extra persuasion and, she could when she needed to, she managed to convince her friend to leave to town for the night, at least. Back in the hotel she explained. They returned the following day with an escort of soldiers and workers. The tomb was empty: no body but no mummy either and a long trail of sand that led deep into the earth. No one dared follow when a wind spoke words of horror coming from below. In fact, all the locals ran away like madmen. “Sometimes, it’s better to let the shadows rest.” “Fine, perhaps that’s not so bad an idea. Even if we leave empty handed.” “Not empty handed, if we leave with our lives then it’s not so bad, right?”
In the way home they slaved trying to decipher the hieroglyphs found on the walls. It took time and a lot of work. Some were ruined by time and others simply were inscrutable. Back at the university reference books helped with a few difficult ones. For the most part it was regular story of a kingdom that found prosperity and destruction in the whims of the gods. The later part where it explained how the King ensured eternal life for him sounded rather fantastic, though. What seemed quite strange were the words copied from one of the King’s sacred books: “The secrets that lay here will make you immortal in many ways. Come, look, learn and change forever.”
