Introduction: Sky Fire
The giant axe weaved over the barbarian’s head and stomped on the ground less than a step away from the retreating warlord. His sword stroke but the brute stopped it with his metal foot and kicked away like a mule. The warlord reeled back but regained his balance. Like a wave the axe once again rose into the sky and feel with all its dead weight. Dashing to a side the sword was thrust forward but the back of a big hand slapped the blade away. The axe retried for a third time while the warlord tried to catch his breath under his armour. The barbarian’s stamina was inhuman and so the axe fell on a cross of swords. The warlord pushed forward and propelled himself backwards: he couldn’t match the barbarian’s strength.
The barbarian kept the painted grin on his face as the axe was lifted once again. If this kept going on the warlord would simply have to retreat until he found a good opening. The axe pounded on the ground as quick steps took the warlord away from the battlefield into better terrain but something pushed him forward and he landed on the axe’s handle. The face of the barbarian was pure confusion: an explosion had made the warlord jump into his axe, where did it come from? Both looked around in a shared moment of incredulity until they realised the position they were in. Once sprung back up onto his feet and the other readied his axe on his shoulder. A second explosion happened and both were launched into the air. The fall was less graceful the bigger the combatant but both were, relatively, unscathed.
The duel had to be, evidently, postponed. More pressing matters were at stake, like staying alive under the unknown attacks. Without thought they scampered under nearby trees and shared a quick glance of disbelief. Before they could get far under the canopy another explosion flew all vegetation to splinters. They kept running between fire and broken bark deep into the forest. This wasn’t a remarkable place, there weren’t strange rumours or far-fetched legends; it was a quiet forest by the side of a small path; the perfect place for a duel, so they had thought. They each went in a different direction through sinuous roads with haste and an uneasy feeling. When arriving at their settlements they related their story to their elders. Word of the duel had spread fast but the legend of the sky fire ran quicker; as if burning each silent tongue.
