Introduction: Between Death and Darkness
“Run.” “What? What’s the matter?” “Don’t argue, run!” His friend followed out of the pub while many others looked with apathy at the scene. It didn’t take long for apathy to be dispelled. The first blow made an opening on the brick wall and the second brought down a good part of the roof. The patrons tried to run but it wasn’t so easy in the chaos and the rubble. The two friends kept running until they reached their families in a slopping street and looked down at the battle: a dark knight was battling a blood battlemage.
Most of the people were running away without direction and certainly not fast enough. As weapons clashed and blows were deflected other buildings, regardless of their reputed sturdiness, fell down. Houses, barracks, shops: it didn’t matter what it was or who was inside, they all fell down. The soldiers knew better than to interfere with such a battle. One victor would emerge, that was natural, but whoever it was the town would lose. Neither knight nor battlemage cared, they were above life, living without being alive and both competing for the same sustenance.
The morning star was deflected again by the heavy mace but the knight’s mount charged and threw the battlemage against a wall. Pinned without escape the morning star painted a very red dawn on the bricks. Triumph was in her hands and when the knight looked around she saw, she felt, she smelled what she needed. The town had mostly been abandoned already but not enough. The few poor souls that remained were never seen again. At noon, with a firm Sun shining bright on the streets, townsfolk dared return and they would never speak about what they saw. No one knew exactly what these kinds of creatures did do to people but it surely wasn’t something anyone would want to witness.
