Introduction: A Ray of Light
“Kneel and pray before the totem. Let it hear your plea and receive your sacrifice…” “What stupid foolishness!” The warrior passed the tree with elaborate carvings and colourful paintings with disdain. “You only need a big sword and a strong arm not the help of imaginary friends.” He heard the rustle in the leaves and stopped: it was nearby. He looked around but the lush vegetation was the perfect hiding place for the beast. “Soon, your head will be mine.” He imagined someone answering: “Make sure it’s not the other way around.” just as he ducked from the slash of a sharp claw.
He turned but the creature had already dissolved among plants and flowers. He had to admit it: “What wonderful camouflage.” He stayed alert, walking slowly, looking, hearing, smelling and feeling. Every sense was ready to provide the warning that would save his life and give him his glory. He felt the spikes numbing his right leg and the diffuse outline of a predator in the air, pouncing on him. His blade was ready and as the claws fell his sword clashed with their keen edges. For a moment they stayed, looking eye to eye, half-vegetal creature against proud hunter. Then the twang of a large weapon interrupted.
The bolt was large and heavy and left the beast impaled to a tree. The screams of horror from the creature, for lack of a better description, made the skin crawl. The Hunter fell and sitting on the floor looked at the creature, bleeding profusely and dying, unable to escape its fate; a clear red torrent over a prismatic canopy. “You’d want to remove those spikes before the wounds infect.” He looked at the woman dressed in white and gold. Her eyes glowed with unexplainable power; a power certainly not of this world. “You stole my trophy.” he managed to say. “You can keep it, there’re plenty more. Just be better prepared next time. The light doesn’t shine in all places.”
