Introduction: Golden Sands
The winds blows and the sand flies, it burns against the skin and blinds the eyes. It’s impossible to see where you are going but there’s isn’t much to see anyway: it’s all sand everywhere. We tried to protect ourselves behind a dune, cowering under our hoods but it was of little use. We were like a bunch of children hiding from our parents’ wrath and they obviously knew where we were and what we were doing. We could only think about the placid waters of the loch outside the monastery. It was the only respite from the dry lips and parched skin that kidnapped our thoughts all too often.
The storm lasted for a good while; it was difficult to tell time with the Sun always shining over us. It never seemed to move, only to disappear and reappear all of a sudden, without announcement. We considered walking but we didn’t really know where to go. The Sun seemed to hide its movements and we were lost. It was our minds playing tricks on us. How many lakes and friendly faces did we see? They’d run to us with water in their hands to quench our thirst but it was always just sand. We breathed with difficulty as we lay in the sand. We could only look around at the horizon and wonder what might lie beyond.
Sara was the first to see it. We saw it too and we laughed and joked about it. A ship sailing the sands? This was the monument to crown all our previous hallucinations. It seemed to see us in the distance because it shifted its course towards us. We just waited and stared, fascinated at such a wonder. When the men and women came down and offered water we accepted. Why not? At least we would die with some hope in us. We drank and the mirage turned to miracle: it was water. We couldn’t believe its fresh and cool touch against our sticky tongues.
The crew helped us aboard and laid us to rest in an empty room of hanging beds. They have a name, hammocks, I didn’t know at the time. I don’t remember for how long we slept. I do remember that people would come from time to time, wake us up, give us food and drink and let us rest. That happened a few years ago. We are now part of the crew, happily helping people stranded in the sands. It was lucky that the Captain saw us that day and decided to rush to our aid; they were actually searching for other people. Well, no wonder it was a miracle: we sail the sands aboard a ship with a heart of gold.
