Introduction: Going Home
“Are you sure there’s nobody here?” “Don’t be a coward! At this time of the night everyone is catching z’s like the guard on the door, come on.” The two shadows walked through the empty corridors of polished metal. They could see their silhouettes reflected on the walls; the low light made them respect their privacy. The first turn was to the left and the second to the right. Three-quarters through the corridor and the door on the right with a large ’24E’ was their destination. The door, unexpectedly, proved to be no obstacle: it was unlocked. “Seems like luck is on our side, right?”
They looked around at large, empty containers of thick glass that reached from floor to roof. They walked forward until they found one with a dark liquid. One shadow prepared a small flask and another operated the machine. They filled half of the flask and quickly covered it. It was time to leave, fast. They walked slowly, though, careful not to shake the flask but their nerves refused to steady their bodies. Each step felt heavier, their bodies weary and the flask less empty. They were right outside the installation when the flask started to overflow with the dark liquid. “It’s free!” “Oh, no!” They looked at each other and paralysed.
The liquid slowly crept through the metallic floor and took a turn left, then a turn right and entered under the door marked ’24E’. Behind a few small bones were left, clean and polished, the parts had no real discernible shape; they could be mistaken for white pebbles. The liquid kept advancing until it reached the container from whence it had been parted. It waited for a moment and then moved to the right. From the bottom of the neighbouring container it entered into a new, empty home. The container was only a third full in comparison with the three quarters of the neighbour but it bubbled a little. It was faint, subtle, but, if the liquid could be said to have a conscience, it could be said that it was happy to be back.
