Introduction: Dragon Slay Academy
“This is a discipline, no an art, you can just take it as something that anyone can do, if you want. When the time comes, you’ll realise that slaying a dragon isn’t as simple as the books make it to be. You need the right equipment and you need the right mindset to survive. You don’t just pit your sword, spear or whatever against the dragon: it’s a battle of minds.” The boy simply shrugged and said: “Let’s get to the good stuff, right?” She was the next to shrug, mentally, and gave the Boy an estimate: you’ll be chewed second, after the Swordsmaster that thinks he knows better than anyone else.
There was preparation, of course and both Boy and Swordsmaster passed all challenges well enough. Then came the time for their first real challenge: to actually fight a dragon. It wasn’t a tamed dragon, there’s no such thing, it was one that had made an agreement for food and shelter; one that could be broken at any time. You don’t negotiate with dragons, you try to convince them that they don’t want to eat you because they can eat something better; it usually worked, usually. Boy and Swordsmaster looked at the beast and the Teacher watched from a distance but not too far; in case something happened.
The Swordsmaster unsheathed, said some nonsense and dashed forward. He was incredibly fast and deflected flames with his sword; which was quite impressive. Then he came into striking distance and found that his sword was no match for the thick scales: its edge was ruined in one strike. The dragon picked the man up and made a mock action of eating him and threw him away into the stacks of hay placed for that purpose. The Boy simply stared and so the dragon advanced and repeated the action. “Well done, so to speak.” said the Teacher.
“Well done?” retorted the dragon. “They are some of the worst you have pitted against me. I would eat them if they weren’t so utterly useless: I fear indigestion from stupidity.” “Okay, no need to be harsh.” “But it’s fun to mock them.” “Right, give them a break, for now. Once they learn a bit more they are all yours.” “I wouldn’t eat them anyway: not enough protein.” “Exactly. I’ll arrange for dinner, now.” She ushered the students away and gave the signal for supper: a happy dragon it’s a dragon that doesn’t eat you. Perhaps they’d learn that by watching the meal. She whispered to them as they stared at meat being torn and shredded: “That could’ve been you.”
