Introduction: A Walk and a Visit
The door opened and the street was dark like the sky. No Moon or stars above, no people or buildings below: just nothingness. He trotted forward. Left and right, up and down was the same but he had been interned for far too long so it was reasonable that he didn’t recognise the world anymore. Perhaps something had happened and erased everything from the face of the Earth. “Now, wouldn’t that be convenient?” he thought. They weren’t getting away so easily. As his eyes got accustomed to the exteriors and the darkness, details emerged. Silhouettes turned into outlines filled with content: things were getting interesting.
A red machine glowed across the street. He looked at it and it seemed to do nothing, just a big light. He walked around and saw that it was producing people from the other side. He didn’t know where they came from but each of them walked in the same direction. He followed and heard the fears of the people: “Quick, Sir doesn’t like when we are late.” People stressed on their steps. “So, Sir doesn’t like his feathers to be ruffled?” he said. Pitiful attempts at half smiles could be seen in the line of people but no one dared say anything. When the mansion appeared with its dim lights on, it seemed to glow eerily in the darkness around.
The people went in through a small side door. Without sound or being seen they walked forward to a room where a man was sitting behind a desk. A lady indicated each person from which door to exit after the man, the Sir, had scribbled notes about each one of them. It was his turn, the lady gave him a knife, he looked at her and she vacantly stared back. He jumped on the desk and stabbed the man until the blade broke; that didn’t stop him. When his arm hurt he climbed down and looked at the woman. “Well done. This way please.” she signalled at the left door. He followed through. The room was strangely familiar, white and empty: it was his old padded cell. He sat in the middle and savoured recent events. “What surprises are in store for tomorrow?”
