Introduction: Talk and Walk
The earth rumbled and the gentlemen looked at each other around the table. “It’s time to go.” Each picked their coat and put their hat on. The air was cold and their visible breath made them look as if they were puffing steam. None of them were powered by anything different than self-preservation and interest, though. The earth shook and they readjusted their legs in an effort to keep their balance. “This is getting worse; we’ll see each other tomorrow night. At least the ones that make it.” There were a few defiant grins but the mood wasn’t welcoming of jokes. They looked up and saw flocks of birds, large and small, fleeing to the south-east. It was a clear signal.
Most chose to scramble away to safe places they had outside the city; one still remained. He wasn’t worried, he had his code of honour and he was sure of what he had done. He wouldn’t say he was a good man, perhaps not even as fair as he intended to, but he was sure he wasn’t bad. He walked through the empty streets dotted with pools of water. Bellowing buildings flanked the sporadic reflection of the waning Moon. He arrived at the Grey Beard pub, sat down and gave a nod to the bartender; his drink didn’t take time to arrive. “Have you seen the birds flying over the city? There were all kinds of them.” “Sure, mate, this time is going to be big.”
He took a long sip without turning to identify the voices that intruded his moment of quiet. He knew it wasn’t going to last but, why were there always interruptions? “When’s the aftershock expected?” “I think that in the wee hours.” “It surely won’t be small like the time.” They laughed, he didn’t, but they were drunk. He stayed in his seat and slowly made his way through the glass. He had to admit it did warm the old bones, at least; unhealthy, perhaps, but effective. It was well over midnight and the time had come already. He wasn’t going to shy away from it: “Not my style.”
Out in the street he closed the coat over the jacket with trembling hands. It was chilly but he was ready, anxious enough to make the cold a secondary concern. He walked to the square and sat in a bench. It took a while, he didn’t check his watch, but the earth started to shake again. It was more violent this time. He remained sat but had to stand up when he saw the earth crack in front of him and swallow the revered fountain in the middle. Backtracking a few steps he stared at tiles and concrete pulverized while gaping wounds opened. It only lasted a few seconds and when it was over he couldn’t help peer down into the abyss just formed.
He noticed a liquid deep below, like and underground river in the distance but there was something that wasn’t right: it’s colour was crimson red. Then he heard the screaming all over the city. He rushed through the streets and saw people gulped into maws that returned blood splashes; he couldn’t tell whose blood it was. The earth seemed merciless, he often saw and heard desperation but also many people witnessing in awe what was going on; just like him. Like many others he walked the streets in a seemingly safe path around terrene monsters that devoured others. He sat down in a flat rock of concrete and managed a slight grin. “Talk the talk… walk the walk.”
