There was a time when a blade was enough. When a warrior of mystic discipline wielded an ornamented sword. He could vanquish foes without being touched. He could strike before others unsheathed. His fame spread on his land and eventually reached beyond its borders. Tales were told of his magnificent skill and many pupils spread the tenets of his art with the sword and his philosophy of life though few would truly understand it.
Once, a strong arm and a reliable blade was enough. With unparalleled resolve the man would charge into enemy lines and slash around. His courage would not falter, his body would resist, his strength would be enviable and triumph would be his. Even though in the name of justice many a misdeed would be carried, in the end his sense of justice and fairness would prevail.
In those times, muscle wasn’t enough. A keen blade would be a great tool but even more fearsome would be a sharp mind. He would set up the strategy and direct, personally, the movement of the troops. He would change tactics, take advantage of enemy mistakes, minimize his own, accept the reality of battle and change tactics as the situation demanded. Not all battles would be of his choosing or follow a worthy cause but he would know how to steer his people to true greatness.
In such legends nowadays stories are built: piles of lies to control the masses and indoctrinate the soldiers. There were once valiant warriors worth emulating. The mockeries we learn about are only pale shadows that reflect the waning light of desperate times. To be brave isn’t to jump towards danger. Heroism is fighting for a good cause and it takes real valour to retreat and fight another day.
The army has been many things to many people but it’s neither what it shows to others nor what it thinks it is. It’s time to form a force that will stand for the people. It’s time to galvanize our hearts with a resolution we can be follow without doubt. It’s time to join the Steel Legion and save this poor, wretched world. We are counting on you.
